Bulls’ Caleb Wilson had a Michael Jordan-like reaction after making history in Summer League debut

Chicago Bulls’ No. 4 pick in the 2026 NBA Draft is already drawing parallels to arguably the greatest player of all time. Caleb Wilson is another member of the UNC Tar Heels long lineage to the Bulls since Michael Jordan made the franchise move in 1984. While the others never captured Jordan’s legendary aura, Wilson arrives with high expectations after a sensational start to his NBA career.
In his Las Vegas Summer League debut, Wilson erupted for 35 points (12-21 shooting) along with five rebounds, two steals, and three blocks against the Memphis Grizzlies. That 35-point performance stands as the highest scoring total in a Summer League debut, yet Wilson shrugged off the significance of the record in the wake of a 96-97 loss to Memphis. “We lost,” he said. “My goal is to come here and win. Somebody’s gonna break it one day, as they always do. I’m happy I got the record, but I’m ready to move on to what’s next. We’ve got another game coming up soon.” His focus on team success over personal milestones underscored a commitment to winning that mirrors the mindset of the franchise’s greatest era.
In today’s NBA environment, where many players measure success by personal statistics, Wilson appears intent on following a path reminiscent of Michael Jordan—one that emphasizes impact with the team first and foremost, rather than chasing quick individual glory. This attitude highlights his potential to become a cornerstone piece for the Bulls as they rebuild, rather than just another player who shines briefly before fading.
Wilson’s Summer League showing came against Cameron Boozer, the forward selected by Memphis one pick ahead of Wilson. Boozer finished with 23 points, six rebounds, and four assists, delivering a solid all-around game. Yet Wilson’s performance stood out more for its depth and efficiency. Notably, Wilson connected on seven three-pointers in his Summer League debut, a remarkable feat considering he made seven threes in his entire final NCAA season. The rapid evolution of the 19-year-old forward is evident, signaling that his game could continue to blossom at a remarkable pace.
As the 2026 Rookie of the Year race approaches, Wilson is expected to be a compelling figure, poised to compete for a prominent role alongside other highly touted prospects such as Boozer, AJ Dybantsa, and Darryn Peterson. If his Summer League form is any indicator, Wilson could become a key pillar for the Bulls and a player fans come to regard with the same reverence as Chicago’s most storied legends.
