Steelers training camp: 4 players with the most to prove

By admin — In News — July 11, 2026

When the Pittsburgh Steelers reconvene in a few weeks for training camp, the majority of the 53-man roster is already in place. Sure, there will be a handful of position battles to monitor, and as camp draws closer we’ll spotlight the players on the roster bubble. For many, though, the objective isn’t simply making the team; it’s proving to the organization and the fan base that they deserve the role they’re expected to fill. Here are four players to watch closely.
Many fans are excited about Roman Wilson getting a fresh start under new head coach Mike McCarthy, yet reality checks in quickly: McCarthy owes him nothing. The Steelers drafted Germie Bernard with the potential to push Wilson for his spot, and Wilson won’t receive any special treatment in the fight to stay on the roster.
Dylan Cook’s hold on the right tackle position is far from secure. Even if Broderick Jones isn’t healthy at the outset of the season, Pittsburgh drafted Max Iheanachor in the first round with the plan for him to contribute, which means Cook must stay vigilant and prove he belongs on the depth chart without letting complacency creep in.
Darnell Washington remains a fan favorite, but after inking a substantial new contract, the question becomes whether he can deliver consistent production for the offense beyond the novelty factor. There’s no guarantee that Washington will translate his promise into sustained impact, so he’ll need to demonstrate that he can contribute regularly.
When it comes to the defense, the trend isn’t lost on this roster dynamic either. Former head coach Mike Tomlin clearly valued Patrick Queen’s presence on the field more than Payton Wilson, regardless of Wilson’s level of play. Like Roman Wilson, there’s no guarantee for Wilson under McCarthy’s system, and he will need to show defensive coordinator Patrick Graham that he can be valuable on passing downs to earn additional opportunities.
This analysis reflects the ongoing concerns about consistency, opportunity, and the ability to adapt under a new coaching regime. As camp unfolds, these four players stand out as those with the most to prove in the pursuit of securing their roles and earning the confidence of both the coaching staff and Steelers fans.
