On this pleasant day, the Athletics will split their focus. While the front office and scouting department begin the process of assembling the next wave of A’s talent for the MLB Draft, the current roster squares off against the Chicago White Sox in the second game of the club’s final series prior to the All-Star break. For the second consecutive year, manager Mark Kotsay’s club has been unable to halt a lengthy skid. Oakland arrives for this afternoon’s game riding a seven-game losing streak and faces a difficult path to return to .500 and re-enter the American League playoff picture.
The White Sox seized the series opener in a decisive fashion, rolling to a 14–1 win. Chicago exploited the A’s struggling pitching staff and an injury-depleted, slumping lineup to end its own skid while delivering another lopsided defeat to Oakland. The “Green and Gold” are intent on leveling the series today and avoiding a scenario in which they head into the finale facing a potential sweep.
The A’s lineup has not been spared from misfortune, and a recent injury could prove to be a significant blow given Nick Kurtz’s growing importance to the offense. First baseman Nick Kurtz has landed on the injured list with a right thumb capsule sprain, an issue that likely contributed to his recent hitting slump. The injury will also keep Kurtz out of Tuesday’s All-Star Game, a particularly disappointing development since he was set to start at first base in his first All-Star appearance in his home state.
Turning back to the field, rookie left-hander Gage Jump will take on the role of stopper for Oakland, taking the mound for his ninth major-league start. The club’s top pitching prospect sits at 3–3 with a 3.77 ERA, a 1.30 WHIP, and 41 strikeouts over 43 innings. Jump began his big-league career in spectacular fashion, delivering a string of dominant early outings. However, his last two starts have shown a dip in form, resulting in two straight losses. In his most recent outing against the Miami Marlins, he permitted five runs on eight hits through three innings. Facing a White Sox lineup that erupted for double-digit runs in their previous game, Jump will need to be at his best to keep Oakland competitive. If he falters, the A’s bullpen, which has shouldered a substantial load in recent weeks, could be called upon earlier than desired.
Jump will oppose White Sox left-hander Bryan Hudson, who brings a 3–2 record and a 2.25 ERA across 41 appearances, including five starts. Hudson is slated to operate as the opener before handing the ball to originally scheduled starter Erick Fedde. The 33-year-old right-hander will appear for the 19th time this season, aiming to give Chicago a solid start before the bullpen takes over.
