Boston’s 2027 Draft: Suddenly Spread Thin

By admin — In News — July 11, 2026

The 2026-27 Boston Bruins roster appears largely determined, though more departures are likely before any additional signings or acquisitions come aboard. This summer has seen the Bruins consistently operate with a mindset of pushing deeper into contention, willingly trading away draft capital in an effort to upgrade the roster after a first-round exit and to become a genuine contender.
In this offseason, Boston has parted with two first-round selections, a second-round pick, and a third-round pick. The two first-round picks were spent to acquire JJ Peterka, a deal that many observers viewed favorably given his potential impact. Reports indicate the Bruins pursued John Carlson before landing Will Borgen from the New York Rangers. Connor Clifton has returned to the fold, signing a two-year contract.
As it stands, Boston holds only one first-round pick projected for the 2027 NHL Draft, with Toronto’s unprotected first-round choice moving to 2028. All indicators point to the Philadelphia Flyers retaining Boston’s 2027 first-round selection. In the meantime, the Bruins possess two fourth-round picks—one their own, one belonging to Winnipeg—that were obtained via a draft-day swap with the Pittsburgh Penguins.
The Bruins are without a fifth-round pick but will retain their own sixth- and seventh-round selections. The fifth-round pick currently sits with Edmonton, who acquired it in the Viktor Arvidsson transaction. The Bruins’ 2027 third-round pick was dealt to Columbus in exchange for Andrew Peeke. The 2027 second-round pick is owned by the New York Rangers as part of the Will Borgen trade.
Looking ahead to the 2027 NHL Draft, Boston could face a relatively lean draft year depending on how the season unfolds. If results turn unfavorable, Bruins General Manager Don Sweeney may have opportunities to recover much of the lost draft capital through potential trades or moves as the season progresses. Boston’s 2027 unrestricted free agents include Pavel Zacha, Casey Mittelstadt, and Sean Kuraly, while Mason Lohrei is set to become a restricted free agent. As the team stands today, the Bruins have committed significant resources toward competing in 2026-27, distributing draft assets widely across the 2027 Draft and leaving the organization with a relatively modest pool of picks in that class, even as the calendar counts down the 11 months to the next draft.
