Grady Emerson selected by Tampa Bay Rays with No. 2 pick in 2026 MLB Draft

By admin — In News — July 11, 2026

Over the years, Grady Emerson has become a defining name in youth and high school baseball, a journey that traces his path from tee ball to the cusp of a Major League Baseball career. In a rapid ascent, Emerson found a home in the spotlight and has quickly established himself as one of the sport’s brightest young talents. The culmination of his hard work arrived on a sunny Saturday afternoon when the Tampa Bay Rays selected him with the No. 2 pick in the 2026 MLB Draft. With that choice, Emerson became the first high school player off the board, a prediction many mock drafts had floated in the lead-up to the draft festivities.
So, who are Rays fans getting in their potential next franchise cornerstone? A closer look at Emerson’s journey from Texas to Tampa reveals a player with a rare combination of talent, character, and resilience. He is the second shortstop from the Dallas area to be chosen inside the top three this decade, following in the footsteps of Bobby Witt Jr. of the Kansas City Royals. Emerson has drawn frequent comparisons to Witt, despite being a left-handed hitter, because their athletic profiles, polished hitting abilities, and strong makeup align so closely. Notably, Emerson trained under Rusty Greer during his senior year, a mentor who also helped guide Witt in his development.
Originally, Emerson was committed to Texas Christian University, but he ultimately flipped his commitment to Texas. However, he won’t be playing for Jim Schlossnagle’s Longhorns in 2027. His high school career began at Argyle before he transferred to Fort Worth Christian, where he posted impressive numbers: a .336 batting average as a freshman, .380 as a sophomore, and .351 as a junior. The standout season, though, came in his senior year at Fort Worth Christian, when Emerson posted a staggering .532 average (42 hits in 79 at-bats) with seven home runs, nine doubles, four triples, and 42 RBIs. He scored 39 runs and stole 21 bases, while drawing 27 walks and just two strikeouts, culminating in slash-line figures of .648/.1.013/.1.661. That historic season helped him capture the Gatorade National Baseball Player of the Year award, underscoring his status as one of the most impactful high school performers of his generation.
In total, Emerson’s four varsity seasons yielded 17 home runs, 45 doubles, 15 triples, 84 RBIs, 126 runs scored, and 64 stolen bases, painting a portrait of a game-changing prospect with impact at the next level. His combination of speed, power, and disciplined plate approach make him a compelling pro prospect who is expected to make an immediate impression once he steps into the professional ranks. For fans following his journey, Emerson’s ascent represents the promise of a future leader in the Rays organization, a player whose talent and work ethic align with the best of this era’s young superstars.
