There has been widespread uncertainty surrounding Manchester United’s pursuit of Ederson. At one stage, the Brazilian looked set to be United’s nailed-on first signing of the summer. United reportedly agreed a package worth £39 million with Atalanta more than five weeks ago, and Ederson had given the green light to a four-year contract with the Red Devils. He even underwent initial medical tests before joining the Brazil squad for the World Cup.
On Friday, Fabrizio Romano made a sensational claim that Manchester United’s deal for Ederson was “off” and “considered as collapsed.” The Italian journalist added that United had communicated their stance to Atalanta, who allegedly remained convinced that their star midfielder is fully fit. The Serie A side were seemingly prepared to welcome him back to Bergamo, insinuating that United had altered their plans. However, several English outlets quickly reported that United sources denied the claim that the deal had collapsed.
Samuel Luckhurst of The Sun wrote on X that United were stressing ongoing processes for three possible signings—Ederson, Santos, and Darlow—and that it was not accurate to say the Ederson deal was off. On Saturday, Romano reiterated his stance that Ederson would not join United this summer. During a discussion on his YouTube channel, the Italian journalist claimed that the 27-year-old had already left England after receiving confirmation that he would not be signing for United. “The deal is not happening anymore. Also, a little bit disappointing on the player side, because Ederson really had this dream of playing for Manchester United,” Romano stated. The Brazil international is now expected to take a holiday before returning to Atalanta.
Meanwhile, according to Italian outlet Sport Mediaset, United are prepared to bid for Manu Kone of AS Roma after Ederson failed his second medical test upon returning from the World Cup. This turn of events suggests United could pivot to alternative midfield targets as the summer window progresses and as medical assessments continue to influence transfer plans. The evolving situation has kept fans and pundits watching closely for further updates on United’s transfer strategy and the status of their reported interest in Ederson.
