4-star CB Censere Gaylord commits to Washington: ‘The coaches made me feel at home’

Censere Gaylord is heading back to the West Coast after announcing his commitment to Washington on Saturday. The four-star cornerback from IMG Academy, who hails from California, chose the Huskies over Georgia in one of the nation’s most loaded defensive back recruitments. Georgia Tech stayed in the mix throughout the process, but Washington ultimately claimed the No. 144 prospect in the Rivals Industry Ranking as the best fit for Gaylord.
The decision was far from easy for Gaylord, who described the choice as a close one. “It was close,” he told Rivals. “I was going back and forth basically this whole recruiting process. Georgia was up there too. Washington and Georgia were high, then the official visit to Seattle. That visit really put Washington on top.” The trip to Seattle reinforced everything Washington’s coaching staff had been selling during his recruitment.
Gaylord said the visit confirmed what he had heard about the program: a strong culture, solid relationships, and a clear path to professional development. “I just like the feel of the place. The coaches made me feel at home. I’ve known most of them since the eighth grade, so I’ve got great relationships with them. The coaches also have great relationships with the players.” He added that Washington’s track record for developing defensive backs helped seal the deal, noting that the Huskies had two corners drafted last year and that the program has a reputation for sending DBs to the league.
Those strong relationships extend back years. Defensive backs coach John Richardson first offered Gaylord when he was at Arizona, and the connection has endured ever since. “I’ve known him since the eighth grade,” Gaylord said. “He gave me my first offer, and our relationship has been good ever since. I have that trust with him. Me and coach Richardson know each other really well.” Head coach Jedd Fisch also played a pivotal role in Gaylord’s decision, as his approach to building a program resonated with the prospect.
“I like how he runs his program. Everything they do is about being a pro—how they train, how they practice, and how they play. He’s a very cool guy, and he’s all about his team and his business. Then he knows how to win too,” Gaylord explained.
Another factor in Gaylord’s decision was the opportunity to stay closer to home. Born in Southern California and now competing at IMG Academy, the chance to play in a familiar region mattered. “I’m from the West Coast, so that was a factor,” he said. “Washington is similar, and it’s not very far away. That definitely helped a little, but my relationships with the coaches, how the program is run, and the culture were the big reasons I chose them.”
Gaylord’s pledge to the Huskies adds to Washington’s growing class and strengthens a defensive back group that has seen success in recent seasons. As he joins Seattle’s roster, Gaylord brings a proven frame, elite athleticism, and a history of trust-based relationships with Washington’s coaches. The combination of a strong pipeline to the NFL, a culture that emphasizes professional development, and a West Coast geography that keeps him close to home all contributed to his decision. The Huskies now add a versatile corner who can develop into a cornerstone piece in their secondary for years to come.
