South African midfielder Jayden Adams, who represented his country at this year’s World Cup, has died at the age of 25. In a statement, South Africa’s Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie expressed deep shock and said: “It is with profound shock and a heavy heart that I have learnt of the passing of Jayden Adams.” He described Adams as “one of the brightest young talents” in South African football, though he did not disclose the cause of death.
Authorities said they have opened an investigation after a 25-year-old man’s body was found at a house in Schotschekloof, a central Cape Town suburb, on Saturday morning. Adams featured in all three of South Africa’s group-stage matches at the World Cup as the team advanced to the Round of 32 for the first time, though he did not play in the knockout defeat by Canada. He was also part of the squad that finished third at the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.
The South African Football Players Union paid tribute on X, writing: “Death has cruelly stolen one of our own. It has robbed our nation of a remarkable footballer.” The union added: “We will forever remember his humility, his extraordinary talent and the pride with which he represented South Africa. Rest in eternal peace, Jayden. You will never be forgotten.”
Adams’s passing comes less than a month after the death of his grandmother, which occurred on the eve of South Africa’s Group A opener against the Czech Republic in Atlanta. The South African Football Association noted at the time that Adams started that match and gave his all while carrying the burden of losing his grandmother.
Born in Cape Town, Adams rose through the Stellenbosch FC academy, becoming the club’s first youth graduate to sign a professional contract in August 2020. He went on to make 139 appearances for Stellenbosch, helping the side lift the Carling Knockout in 2023. In January 2025, Adams joined Mamelodi Sundowns, where he added a Premiership title to his honours and helped the squad triumph in the CAF Champions League.
During his time with Sundowns, Adams continued to be recognized for his technical ability, versatility, and calm presence on the ball. His development from Stellenbosch’s youth ranks to one of South Africa’s most promising midfield talents underscored a career marked by steady progress and professional grit. His performances at both club and national levels highlighted a player who could influence games with intelligent movement, precise passing, and a penchant for delivering in important moments.
Adams’s death is a significant loss for South African football, depriving the sport of a dynamic midfielder in the prime of his career. His family, teammates, coaches, and fans now face the challenging task of processing this tragedy while celebrating the life and contributions of a player who carried the hopes of a nation on the world stage. As South Africa mourns, many will remember Adams for the promise he showed from his youth through to his appearances on football’s biggest stages, and for his role in a generation that helped the national team reach new heights on the world stage.
