Rangers have had a bustling summer thus far, closing their sixth signing as Cammy Devlin looks set to reunite with former manager Derek McInnes once his Hearts contract expires. The 28-year-old Australia international chose not to extend his stay at Tynecastle and instead agreed to a two-year deal with an option for an extra year in Glasgow. Devlin’s journey began in the youth ranks of the Sutherland Sharks and Western Sydney Wanderers, where he progressed through the academies before turning out for their reserves. He also spent time with Sydney FC’s youth setup in the NPL, making nine senior appearances during the 2018-19 season. He moved to Wellington Phoenix on a Bosman deal in 2019, eventually earning a central role in the first team.
Devlin’s calm presence in midfield drew the attention of Hearts’ scouts, who secured his services for €36k in August 2021, a few months after he had played for the Newcastle Jets. He went on to make 176 appearances for the Scottish club and played a pivotal part in their Championship bid, which ultimately ended in heartbreak as Celtic clinched the title in the final league gameweek.
In an encounter at Tynecastle on December 19, 2024, during the UEFA Conference League group phase, Devlin’s performance continued to captivate observers. His reaction to FC Petrocub’s second goal in the match highlighted his ongoing commitment to the game. McInnes, who has just replaced Danny Rohl as Rangers’ new head coach, has brought Devlin in to strengthen the midfield unit. The Australian has been praised for his high tackle rates, ranking among the top players for interceptions and defensive contributions, and for his overall recoveries in the previous Premiership season. Currently enjoying a break after the Socceroos’ World Cup elimination, Devlin described his move to Rangers as “an absolute honour and privilege.” He also spoke highly of McInnes, stating, “Cammy is obviously a player I know, and I am well aware of what he will offer to Rangers. His levels of consistency for me were superb, and he is the type of player that every manager wants in his team.” McInnes, who is delighted to have him for a second consecutive campaign, echoed those sentiments.
Meanwhile, Rangers have also secured the signature of former Sunderland midfielder Dan Neil on a free transfer. The club has been linked with other midfield targets, including Lewis Ferguson, Jens Hjertø-Dahl, Vanja Dragojević, and Ryan Fosso, though they remain well stocked in central areas with Nicolas Raskin, Connor Barron, Mohamed Diomande, and Tochi Chukwuani having been the preferred options last season. Nonetheless, several departures look likely in the near future, with Raskin’s potential mega-money move drawing interest from multiple clubs. Barron could be part of a player-plus-cash arrangement for Ferguson, while José Cifuentes and Lyall Cameron appear likely to depart in the coming days.
Devlin is the kind of system player who thrived under McInnes’ four-man midfield. His elite tackling, box-to-box energy, and ability to retain possession, combined with his tactical awareness, make him a valuable asset to Rangers. As he settles into life in Glasgow, the support for his arrival is rooted in the belief that his skill set complements the club’s strategic approach, offering both protection and creativity in the middle of the park. With his experience at Hearts and his proven performance levels, Devlin is expected to be a reliable cornerstone for Rangers as they look to compete on multiple fronts in the new campaign.
