Stones, Madueke start England World Cup quarter-final against Norway

John Stones and Noni Madueke were drafted into England’s lineup for Saturday’s World Cup quarter-final against Norway, as Ezri Konsa started at right-back for the fourth time in six matches. Konsa, who has been the starting centre-back for every game of the tournament so far, is set to operate on the right flank with Jarell Quansah suspended, while Reece James sits on the bench after suffering a hamstring injury. Stones had not begun a match since England’s tournament opener, but he came on as a substitute to help England withstand a late Mexico surge and secure a 3-2 victory to reach the last eight. Madueke earned his place on the right wing in place of his Arsenal teammate Bukayo Saka, who impressed against Mexico by providing the assist for Jude Bellingham’s opener but has been trying to shake off an Achilles dispute.
Declan Rice and Marc Guehi were included in the starting XI despite having missed a training session earlier in the week. Harry Kane and Bellingham have together tallied 10 of England’s 11 goals at this World Cup, underscoring their role as the primary attacking threats against Norway, who are entering their first quarter-final in Scandinavia. On the opposite end of the pitch, England fields a makeshift defence charged with containing Erling Haaland, who has struck seven times across his first four games at a major tournament.
As the match unfolds, England must navigate the challenge posed by Norway’s defensive solidity while also exploiting the creative spark provided by Kane and Bellingham. The unusual defensive setup, with Konsa deploying out wide and Stones providing a familiar presence in central defense, reflects England’s willingness to adapt tactically to counter Norway’s strengths. Madueke’s pace and directness on the right, coupled with Saka’s possible availability off the bench if needed, add attacking options as England seek to advance further in the competition. The outcome rests on England’s ability to maintain composure under pressure and convert chances against a stubborn Norwegian unit, with Haaland providing a constant reminder of the danger that lies at the far end of the field.
