Today the Orioles’ attention is squarely on the future, as they spent time evaluating prospects and adding a few new names to their ranks. Among their recent selections, seventh overall pick Eric Booth Jr., a high school outfielder from Mississippi, stands out as a promising talent. The hope is that a handful of the young players they’re calling up this weekend will mature into key contributors for Orioles teams in the years to come.
Yet the 2026 Orioles still have to contend in the present, and their goal remains to win games now. With a record seven games below .500, the current situation isn’t ideal. Still, they’ve just won two straight and sit only three games back of the final wild-card spot, a berth currently held by the Seattle Mariners, who themselves have a sub-.500 record. It’s a reminder that the American League is perceived as relatively weak this season, suggesting that at least one, perhaps two, underperforming teams could still be in the hunt for meaningful October baseball.
To become one of those teams that forces late-season drama, Baltimore must take care of business against opponents lower in the standings. They did their part in the opener against Kansas City on Friday, and another victory tonight would push the streak to three straight wins.
The pitching matchup looks favorable for the Orioles. When he’s right, Kyle Bradish is a high-end arm at the top of the rotation. Noah Cameron, on the other hand, hasn’t delivered the consistency he showed in his debut season. His left-handed delivery can be a strategic edge, and sometimes that advantage is enough to tilt a game in Baltimore’s favor.
Manager Craig Albernaz has crafted his lineup to align with left-handed starters tonight, giving prominent opportunities to Coby Mayo and Tyler O’Neill. However, the lineup places the left-handed-hitting Jackson Holliday at second base rather than right-handed Blaze Alexander. Holliday has been swinging hot bats of late and has, once again, posted stronger numbers against left-handed pitching than against right-handed hurlers. Alexander has been especially productive against right-handed pitchers, so the decision to start Holliday on the lefty-dominant side of the split is a logical one.
Let’s go out there and secure the series win, Orioles fans. It’s a big night for this team as they chase a spot in October, and a victory would give them momentum as they continue to tilt the standings in their favor.
