Mets select Texas A&M LHP Shane Sdao 120th overall

By admin — In News — July 11, 2026

With their final Day 1 selection, the Mets chose Shane Sdao, a senior left-handed pitcher from Texas A&M. Sdao stood out as an intriguing high-volume reliever during his first two seasons with the Aggies and was slated to move into the rotation in 2025. However, a Tommy John surgery sidelined him for the entire season, and he ultimately went undrafted despite being viewed as a compelling mid-round target on Baseball America’s 2025 board. Returning to action in 2026, Sdao posted a 4-4 record with a 7.03 ERA, scattering 78 3/4 innings, recording 783 strikeouts and 21 walks, with the majority of his work coming as a starter.
When at his best, Sdao can reach the upper 90s with solid extension and offers three breaking balls. The standout pitch is an east-west slider that aligns with the Mets’ preference for horizontal breaking ball profiles. In addition to the slider, he has shown a curveball, a cutter, and a changeup, though the changeup is by far the weakest offering in his repertoire. There remains a degree of projection with Sdao, especially given his age—nearly 23 rather than 22—and his lean frame after returning from injury. The Mets likely envision taking this still-presently unrefined talent and extracting meaningful improvements, leveraging the physical tools and the potential for growth.
Baseball America rated Sdao 91st on its top-500 list, underscoring the belief that his ceiling is substantial if development proceeds as hoped. Selecting a senior sign this early in the draft, even when he’s among the better senior signs available, signals that New York is prioritizing financial flexibility to allocate resources elsewhere in the board. It raises the possibility that Carson Wiggins could be closer to his slot than anticipated, or that Aiden Robbins might require additional overslot attention, which would not do the Mets’ evaluation for those two picks any favors. Another plausible angle is that the Mets are aiming to conserve funds to distribute across later innings, providing more flourishes for the late rounds.
As the draft unfolds, there is much to monitor regarding how the rest of Day 2 shapes the Mets’ strategy. The decision to take Sdao as a senior sign early on Day 1 suggests a deliberate mix of upside and financial consideration, with the club signaling a plan to optimize their bonus pool for subsequent selections while pursuing a potential high-reward arm who could develop into a back-rotation contributor or even a mid-rotation piece if the pieces click. The broader implications for the organization’s draft philosophy will become clearer as further selections are announced and evaluated against the backdrop of the Mets’ stated aims for immediate impact and long-term upside.
