OFFICIAL: Fiorentina off the top rope to sign Udinese’s Arthur Atta

One thing you have to give Fabio Paratici is that he keeps the wheels turning. Yesterday, multiple outlets suggested he was ready to swoop into Udine for star midfielder Arthur Atta, and today Fiorentina confirmed that the Frenchman has signed on the dotted line. For fans, it feels like a sudden move, especially given how Atta has been tied to a string of big clubs in England and across Europe over the past few months. Udinese has priced him accordingly, according to Nicolo Schira: a 30 million euro transfer fee plus a 30 percent sell-on clause. The deal also includes a five-year contract that pays Atta 1.5 million euros annually.
Atta is an exciting player. True to Udinese’s profile, he combines impressive physical traits—tall, fast, and wiry strength that helps him shake off defenders—with slick technical ability and a flair for dribbling, including a knack for nutmegs. While he can operate with the ball, his best role appears to be as an off-ball operator who drifts into pockets of space in the final third to receive, turn, and surge at goal. He doesn’t primarily control possession in deeper positions, but rather exploits gaps higher up the pitch. This season, he posted a career-best 5 goals and 4 assists within Udinese’s transition-based system, and he earned high marks across metrics for creativity and chance creation.
Despite his languid appearance, Atta offers plenty of graft. He presses aggressively high and uses his physicality to bother opposing players, though he isn’t a true midfield destroyer. Like many midfielders whose strength lies in finding creases in the opponent’s defense, he can disappear for stretches, particularly when the opposing side sits deep. Yet he can rise to the occasion, as evidenced by his goals against both Milan clubs and Lazio this year.
Atta is a first-generation French talent with Beninese roots; his family settled in Rennes, where he developed through the youth system before moving to Metz at 16. He broke into Metz’ senior team in 2022, helping Les Grenats return to Ligue 1 and establishing himself as a Ligue 1-caliber player despite Metz later slipping back to the lower tier. That groundwork opened the door for Udinese to bring him on loan in 2024 and ultimately sign him permanently for €8 million last summer. The €30 million price tag would be Fiorentina’s club-record transfer, a bold figure even with inflation considerations, and it carries a measure of risk. Yet Atta seems cut from the right cloth to shoulder such a move. His cool, composed on-field persona is complemented by a supportive family network; his father, Éric, is the head scout at Metz, providing a second set of eyes and a trusted sounding board.
Unlike Roberto Piccoli, Atta would not be occupying the same slot as Fiorentina’s current best player. In fact, a midfield trio consisting of Atta, Nicolò Fagioli, and Cher Ndour could be intriguing due to the complementary profiles they bring. If nothing else, Paratici’s willingness to open the purse strings demonstrates a readiness to invest for immediate impact; a move of this magnitude signals that Fiorentina aren’t hedging their bets and are prepared to push for tangible upgrades in the near term. In the broader sense, it underscores Paratici’s approach to spending, even if the figure headlines a high-stakes gamble. The transfer would push the club’s outlay into the vicinity of fifty-five million euros when you factor in related costs, underscoring a deliberate, ambitious strategy rather than cautious, incremental improvement.
