Seattle Seahawks fans react to ‘utter joke’ team sale to billionaire with 49ers association

Fans of the Seattle Seahawks have reacted with anger to news that the franchise is being sold to a group led by Vinod Khosla, a minority owner of the San Francisco 49ers. On Saturday, July 11, it was confirmed that the estate of Paul G. Allen had agreed to a sale, reportedly valued at a record-setting $9.6 billion. The Seahawks issued a statement saying: “The Estate of Paul G. Allen today announced it has entered into a formal sale agreement with an ownership group led by the Khosla family, including Vinod Khosla, for the Seattle Seahawks NFL franchise. The Khosla family will become the team’s controlling owner. We are honored to be entrusted as the next stewards of the Seattle Seahawks. We look forward to building on the winning legacy Paul Allen created and to earning the trust of the Seahawks organization and fans everywhere. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed. The transaction remains subject to NFL approval in the months ahead.”
The news of a record NFL sale did not sit well on social media platform X. One fan wrote, “Complete and utter joke. We let the enemy buy the team and now we’re going to be purposefully destroyed from the inside out. Idiotic thinking from the board and estate.” Another commented, “Crazy you win a Super Bowl and sell off a team. How many times has that been done?” A supporter added, “We literally sold our team to a partner of our division rival. I’m at a loss for words.” One person said simply, “I hate it,” while another described it as “Awful news.”
Many fans expressed discomfort at the idea of the group being purchased by someone already within the NFL, especially given the Seahawks’ recent success. The sale remains subject to NFL approval, though it could break the record set by the Washington Commanders’ $6.05 billion sale in 2023. The Allen estate began the sale process just ten days after Seattle defeated the New England Patriots to win their second Super Bowl in three decades under the previous ownership structure. Allen purchased the Seahawks from Ken Behring in 1997 and kept the team in Seattle, despite earlier plans to move it to Anaheim, California.
The purchaser group has been led by the Khosla family, and ESPN reports that they will be required to surrender their ownership stake in the 49ers. For now, the deal hinges on NFL clearance, with observers watching closely as the league reviews the potential implications of transferring control to a group already tied to another franchise. The developing situation has sparked widespread reaction from Seahawks fans, many of whom are uneasy about the future direction of the team under new ownership.
