​Although they weren’t widely viewed as front-runners to shape the market in NHL trade and free agency, the Pittsburgh Penguins now appear poised to shake things up in pursuit of the top available restricted free agent on the open market. In Dallas, fans remain on edge as forward Jason Robertson—who has reached the 40-goal milestone three times in his career—continues a standoff with Stars general manager Jim Nill. Robertson has filed for salary arbitration and reportedly turned down a contract extension that would have sent him to the Seattle Kraken at $15 million per season.
In this backdrop, the Penguins have emerged as genuine contenders to land Robertson, a move that would represent a major acquisition for a franchise that is preparing for the eventual departures of longtime stars Evgeni Malkin and Sidney Crosby. I don’t know why it didn’t happen, but I heard there were some pretty legitimate talks. Penguins assistant general manager Jason Spezza spoke indirectly about Robertson, declining to comment on the player himself while signaling that the organization has been active. “I won’t speak directly on him, but I will tell you that we’ve done lots of work and inquired on lots of different players throughout our time here in the last few weeks, and we will continue to,” Spezza said. “I think that’s the job, and that’s what we’re trying to do, is to make sure we’re always in on everything and understanding what’s going on around the league, and where that fits into our puzzle. Jason’s obviously a good player that lots of teams have interest in, and we’re going to continue to investigate everything that’s out there.” Robertson has spent his entire NHL career with the Stars and, as noted, has demonstrated elite scoring ability by reaching the 40-goal mark on multiple occasions.
The Penguins recognize that life after Malkin and Crosby is approaching, with both veterans near the end of their careers. Malkin signed a one-year extension, and Crosby is tied to the organization for one more season.
