Incoming Los Angeles Lakers rookie Cameron Carr continues to turn heads during summer league play. In the team’s opener of the NBA summer league on Friday, Carr poured in 18 points on 7-for-13 shooting, while also contributing two blocks and a steal in a 96-84 victory. His offensive promise is clear, but questions linger on the other end of the floor. Carr’s ball-handling and help defense look solid, yet his ability to hold up in man-to-man situations could ultimately influence how much early playing time he earns in his NBA career.
After Friday’s game, the 6-foot-5 guard acknowledged there is substantial room for improvement on defense. “I gotta be better. I gotta be a lot better defensively,” Carr said. “I can get as many deflections as I want, but if you give up a straight-line drive, you still can’t help anybody. So I gotta be a lot better defensively, be more aware, talk and don’t be a lapse. Don’t be an area that people can go at.”
The Lakers are in dire need of 3-and-D capabilities and two-way versatility, ideally from players who bring high athleticism. Carr fits that mold with impressive physical tools. A 42-inch vertical leap and a 7-foot-1 wingspan should aid him in becoming a disruptive defender, in addition to making his jumper harder to contest or block. If he can translate his length and quickness into solid on-ball defense and reliable help rotations, Carr could be a valuable asset on both ends of the floor.
Defensively, Los Angeles ranked 20th in defensive rating last season, a figure the team is eager to improve. While adding shot-blocking center Walker Kessler would help, a more effective top-to-bottom defense will require players like Carr to develop into strong positional defenders who can contribute meaningfully on offense as well. If Carr can refine his man-to-man technique, awareness, and communication, he could become a key piece in a defense that aims to climb into the top 10.
Overall, Carr’s summer league performance signals a high ceiling. His ability to impact the game with scoring punch and shows of hustle already stands out, but his development on the defensive end will determine how quickly he earns a regular role with the Lakers and how far his upside can take him in his rookie season. As he himself noted, there is a clear path to improvement, and the team will no doubt be watching closely as summer league action continues.
