The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have done an impressive job preserving their core in recent seasons, but as a talented 2026 roster takes shape, the front office could soon be faced with some tough choices. One player who could complicate those decisions is Yaya Diaby. Entering a contract year, Diaby has a substantial opportunity in front of him. If he leverages Tampa Bay’s improved pass-rush rotation and posts a breakout season, he could rapidly become one of the most expensive players on the Buccaneers’ roster. And that would present a favorable problem for the franchise.
For much of Diaby’s career, the Buccaneers have sought a consistent running mate opposite him. While there have been flashes from various players, Tampa Bay has never had another edge rusher who forced offenses to continually fear the other side. Now, with the 15th overall pick spent on Reuben Bain Jr., the addition of veteran Al-Quadin Muhammad after a career-best season, and the return of David Walker following an ACL injury that sidelined him for his entire rookie year, the depth at outside linebacker is deeper than it has been under Todd Bowles. Anthony Nelson remains a dependable rotational piece, while Chris Braswell enters his second season with the aim of carving out a larger role. On paper, this is the strongest outside linebacker room the Buccaneers have had during Bowles’s tenure. That depth could be exactly what helps Diaby take the next step.
For the first time in his career, opposing offenses won’t be able to devote their entire attention to slowing him down. With credible threats surrounding him, Diaby should face more favorable matchups and have more opportunities to rush quarterbacks one-on-one. Pass rushers command some of the highest dollars in football, and teams are continually on the hunt for players who can consistently pressure the quarterback. A young, explosive edge defender entering his prime will always attract significant interest if he becomes a free agent. The Buccaneers have already shown a commitment to keeping their own players, but they also stand at the edge of several major financial decisions.
Baker Mayfield, Cody Mauch, and other key contributors could all require new contracts soon. The Buccaneers clearly view Diaby as a cornerstone of their defense. Now, he has the chance to prove it.
