Even before the offseason began in earnest, rumors about which teams might try to land LeBron James on their roster were multiplying by the hour. When James finally announced his departure from the Los Angeles Lakers, many of those rumors sharpened into real possibilities, with fans and analysts weighing every potential path for the four-time MVP. Early chatter tied the San Antonio Spurs and the New York Knicks to James, and talk of reunions with the Miami Heat or the Cleveland Cavaliers also lingered, alongside possible new homes with the Minnesota Timberwolves or the Philadelphia 76ers.
Yet one franchise continued to hover at the center of attention: the Golden State Warriors. In the early summer, Golden State appeared to be assembling a bona fide super-team to rival any in the league. The idea on the table was to trade for Anthony Davis by sending Jimmy Butler in the opposite direction, then weave James into a lineup that could feature Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, James, and Davis. Still, nothing concrete materialized to move that plan forward.
Simultaneously, it seemed increasingly likely that Davis might remain with the Washington Wizards for the time being. If that stayed the case, the Warriors’ spotlight in the LeBron sweepstakes began to dim, and the focus shifted more toward other teams like the Timberwolves and the 76ers, both of whom intensified their pursuit of James. The possibility of a reunion with the Heat or the Cavaliers—teams loaded with sentiment and storylines—grew, and Golden State’s status as a potential final landing spot appeared to fade.
But Bleacher Report insider Jake Fischer wasn’t ready to crown another destination as the outright favorite for James. He stressed that the Warriors remained in the mix, even if the narrative around Golden State had swung between “front-runners” and “not the frontrunner” at different moments. “I do think the Warriors are still as involved as any team. I want to say that too. As much as the reunion with Cleveland and Miami would be storybook, this new All-Star team, traveling Team USA vibe that would exist in Golden State, I think, is something that is still very much on the table,” Fischer said. He acknowledged the roller-coaster dynamic of the Warriors’ pursuit, noting that there were times when they looked like the frontrunner and others when they did not.
Ultimately, James—an unrestricted free agent for the first time in nearly a decade—holds all the leverage. He can decide where his storied career might conclude, independent of others’ expectations. For the Warriors, a combination of personal connections—his friendship with Green and his admiration for Curry—could make Golden State just as enticing as any other destination. Yet the ultimate choice rests on James’s assessment of what constitutes the perfect final act for his career, a decision that will shape the NBA landscape for years to come.
