The 2026 World Cup has produced a dream semifinal field in Argentina, England, France and Spain

With apologies to World Cup 2026 co-hosts Canada, Mexico, and the United States, this is the ideal semifinal lineup. One side features France and Spain, the other England and Argentina. Is there a more compelling pairing? Not, in FIFA’s eyes anyway. Admittedly, rankings aren’t flawless, but this marks the first World Cup in which the semifinalists are the top four teams entering the tournament. France sits at No. 1, Argentina at No. 2, Spain at No. 3, and England at No. 4.
A semifinal featuring the USMNT or Mexico wouldn’t have seemed improbable given their home-field advantage, yet it wouldn’t have been nearly as strong. Each of these four global powers has been buoyed by its elite talents. Lionel Messi’s continued excellence needs no introduction. The 38-year-old is in pursuit of the Golden Boot and a second consecutive World Cup title, adding to his already legendary status. If it weren’t for Messi, France’s Kylian Mbappé, at 27, would likely already be the all-time World Cup goal leader. Messi’s eight goals in this tournament bring his World Cup total to 21, while Mbappé has 20 in 20 appearances. Thanks to two extra assists, Mbappé holds a slight edge in the Golden Boot race.
England’s Harry Kane is tied for fifth on the all-time World Cup scoring list with 14 and became England’s all-time leading World Cup scorer earlier in the tournament. He has six goals this campaign, but he slipped to fourth in the Golden Boot standings after a teammate surpassed him in the ranking. Jude Bellingham, meanwhile, delivered both goals in England’s 2-1 victory over Norway, signaling his emergence as a dynamic attacker who can create space in the box and pounce on rebounds. At 23, Bellingham enjoyed a breakthrough season with Real Madrid and was a central figure for England in the 2022 World Cup as a teenager. Some supporters worried whether he would secure a consistent starting role this time around, yet he has proven why he is among the best attacking midfielders in the world.
On the other side is Spain’s teenage sensation, Lamine Yamal. Though he has just one goal and no assists this tournament, his presence alterar the dynamic of Spain’s attack is unmistaken. Opponents must contend with him, and that attention alone makes Spain more dangerous whenever he is on the pitch.
Spain, the 2024 European champions, have advanced to the semifinals for the first time since their 2010 triumph. Prior to their Round of 16 victory over Austria, Spain had not won a knockout-round game since lifting the trophy in 2010. Now they are functioning with ruthless efficiency, even if the football at times isn’t the most breathtaking to watch. The decisive moment in their quarterfinals—Belgium’s goal against them—marked the first time Spain had conceded in the tournament, underscoring how dominant they have been in possession and control.
This field represents a convergence of talent, history, and star power, with each nation contributing its own storylines and personalities to a semifinals slate rich in intrigue and potential.
