Conor McGregor waited five years for his return to the UFC, and it may be a long time before fans see him back in the octagon again. The former two-division UFC champion’s highly anticipated comeback ended in a brutal fashion on Saturday night at UFC 329, when he appeared to suffer a devastating right knee injury just seconds into his rematch with Max Holloway. The fight lasted a mere 69 seconds, marking McGregor’s first defeat since 2021 after referee Mike Beltran waved off the contest with the Irish star clearly compromised.
Afterward, McGregor quickly exited the arena with a pronounced limp and did not speak to the media. Hours later, the 37-year-old broke his silence on social media, insisting that he went into the bout without an injury and describing his current state as being in “hell.” He wrote that his “head gasket is gone,” insisting he had no injuries going into the fight and that he was throwing kicks, planting, and jumping throughout the training camp and even backstage before the fight. McGregor stressed that the injury seemed to come out of nowhere and that he is “beyond dark here,” likening his condition to being in hell.
McGregor’s career has weathered two previous ACL injuries, including a torn ACL suffered in his first UFC encounter with Holloway nearly 13 years ago, a setback that did not prevent him from winning the bout by decision that night. More recently, McGregor’s most recent outing prior to UFC 329 occurred in a 2021 trilogy clash with Dustin Poirier, a fight that ended in gruesome fashion when he sustained a broken leg. The失 loss at UFC 329 adds another chapter to a career marked by dramatic comebacks and brutal setbacks.
A former featherweight and lightweight champion, McGregor entered UFC 329 with two fights left on his current contract and was widely expected to announce a return in early 2027. That anticipated return date, however, is now in serious jeopardy as he recovers from a knee injury that could sideline him for a substantial period.
Fans and analysts will be watching closely for updates on McGregor’s recovery timeline and any forthcoming statements about his future in the sport. The UFC 329 card delivered a dramatic night of action, with results and highlights that will be remembered for years, but for McGregor, the focus now shifts to rehabilitation and deciding what lies ahead in his storied career. For those seeking a comprehensive recap, the UFC 329 results and notable moments are available, offering a complete overview of the night’s outcomes and standout performances.
