World Cup heartbreak for former Celt Kristoffer Ajer

By admin — In News — July 12, 2026

Former Celtic favourite Kristoffer Ajer endured heartbreak alongside much of the Norwegian population and a large portion of Scottish viewers as the Norway national team were edged out of the World Cup quarter-finals by England in a dramatic Saturday night clash. Norway had been the better side on the night, creating chances and dominating possession, but squandered several opportunities and saw a goal ruled out by VAR, costing them a route to the last four and leaving England, under Thomas Tuchel’s management, to advance. The English were more clinical when it mattered, converting their few chances, while a fortified Norwegian defense, anchored by the former Celtic quadruple-winning central defender, kept the scoreline tight for long periods.
Ajer nearly etched his name into Norwegian football folklore with a header that kissed the bar while the scores were level at 1-1, at a time when Solbakken’s men were pressing hardest. Had that effort found the net, Norway’s chances of progress would have been markedly different. The towering centre-back enjoyed a rich spell at Celtic, where his leadership and composure were on full display, most memorably during the Covid-delayed 2020 Scottish Cup final when he coolly converted the decisive spot kick to secure an unprecedented quadruple treble for the club. On this night, his performance was similarly assured, as he stifled prolific striker Harry Kane and helped an organized Norwegian unit frustrate England.
Unfortunately for Ajer and his teammates, Jude Bellingham’s late magic, delivered at the start of extra-time, proved decisive and spared England from a tense conclusion. Bellingham’s breakthrough moment evoked memories of Porto’s opener in the 2003 UEFA Cup Final in Seville, underscoring how one moment of quality can tilt the balance in a tightly contested game. Even with England advancing to set up a semi-final with Argentina, Norway could take pride in their display, which many observers felt deserved more from the night.
Kristoffer Ajer has continued to develop as a strong Premier League presence with Brentford and has established himself as a key figure for the Norwegian national team at the highest level. For those who followed his career at Celtic, this performance would not have come as a surprise. Ajer and his teammates can return to Oslo with their heads held high, knowing they produced a brave and spirited showing that left a lasting impression. The question many will ask is whether Scotland can draw inspiration from Norway’s example and translate that momentum into their own pursuit of national improvement.
As for the supporters, they deserve a heroes’ welcome for the team’s efforts. If Norway can rise to such heights, perhaps Scotland can build on this momentum and aspire to similar achievements in the future.
