Bruno Guimaraes Directly Told Newcastle He Wants Arsenal Transfer: Report

By admin — In News — July 12, 2026

Newcastle United’s Bruno Guimarães saga has taken another twist as it becomes clear that the midfielder has told the club of his desire to move to Arsenal. Sky Sports’ Keith Downie clarified on YouTube that Guimarães personally informed Newcastle of his wish to pursue a move to the Premier League champions, even though Arsenal has yet to contact Newcastle directly. “Bruno Guimarães had basically told the club he wanted to leave, and he wanted to go to Arsenal,” Downie explained. “But I didn’t know whether he’d done that directly or indirectly. My information now is that it was directly.”
This revelation marks a significant turn because much of the chatter surrounding a potential transfer has circulated through agents and intermediaries rather than through Arsenal itself. Inside Newcastle, there has been a steady stream of denials regarding any January-style breakthrough, with club insiders pushing back against the noise and insisting that reports from agents were overblown and not reflective of the club’s position. Downie noted that Newcastle are stunned by Arsenal’s silence—no bid, no direct contact—while the surrounding chatter has been fueled by agents, including the involvement of a high-profile super-agent who has reportedly entered the equation.
Downie also confirmed that Guimarães is genuinely interested in leaving, but he stressed that any move will only proceed under two clear conditions: Arsenal must make a firm offer, and Newcastle must receive what it deems a strong fee. “Bruno has directly said he would like to pursue that opportunity, but it’s only on two grounds,” Downie said. These conditions could help Newcastle avoid a standoff reminiscent of the situation with Alexander Isak, or they could trigger a protracted negotiation if the Magpies begin to reject offers as they arrive, potentially dragging the process into the later days of the summer.
Nevertheless, Downie indicated that Guimarães will not force a move if no agreement is reached. He suggested the motivation behind the transfer is not merely financial, but footballing. “It’s probably been wrongly reported that this is a financial decision,” Downie said. “From what I’m hearing now, this is a footballing decision for Bruno. Is he going to get more than that at Arsenal? Yes, probably. Is he going to get loads more? Probably not. But for him, this is about football reasons—he’s 29 in a couple of months, and he wants to win trophies. He wants to win things.”
Newcastle remains reluctant to part with its captain, and Guimarães’ contract gives the club leverage in any negotiations. If Arsenal finally makes official contact, Eddie Howe and technical director Ross Wilson may need to convince Guimarães that Newcastle’s long-term project remains compelling enough to lead. That message will be crucial if the club intends to resist offers or to secure a substantial fee that reflects Guimarães’ value and leadership on the pitch. The situation continues to unfold, with Arsenal’s next move likely to determine whether this saga concludes with a transfer or a renewed commitment to the player who has been central to Newcastle’s plans in recent seasons.
