​I’m convinced that both Horkas and Tjark are solid prospects, but for me the target should be a goalkeeper I’ve written about regularly for The Celtic Star and now for Celtic Shorts: Croatia’s number one, Dominik Livakovic. Livakovic is a true class act who has already proven himself at the highest level, and he reinforced that again with a four-match stint for Croatia at the World Cup. Croatia went out in the last-32 to Portugal by a narrow margin, underscoring the quality of their side, and Livakovic’s performances were a standout.
At 31, he is relatively young for a goalkeeper and would likely command a transfer fee of around £5 million, given that he is currently out of favor at Fenerbahce. That makes the move more feasible than many other top goalkeepers, and Fenerbahce shouldn’t present insurmountable obstacles in negotiations. In terms of club football, Livakovic has spent the majority of his career competing at the highest levels—winning domestic titles and cups in Croatia and regularly pulling on the European stage. He is a class act with a wealth of experience, and he would be the man to wear the gloves at Celtic Park without question.
While Horkas and Tjark may offer exciting potential and possess their own strengths, they do not match Livakovic in terms of ability, experience, or proven track record. In short, he surpasses them on every meaningful metric and represents the sort of decisive, reliable presence Celtic needs between the sticks.
So, for the umpteenth time, I’m advocating that Celtic go all out to sign Dominik Livakovic. He is talented, seasoned, and, crucially, affordable in today’s market. What a signing that would be for Celtic.
