2 Texas A&M matchups that will ‘shape the 2026 CFB season’

By admin — In News — July 12, 2026

This week, ESPN’s Football Power Index rated Texas A&M’s 2026 schedule as the ninth toughest in the nation, a respectable placement considering the Aggies will play five road games and open SEC play with rematches against LSU and Missouri within the first five weeks. In Mike Elko’s third year as head coach, Texas A&M is projected to have a 39% chance to reach the College Football Playoff for a second consecutive season, even after a record-setting 2026 NFL Draft saw 10 Aggies selected. First-year offensive coordinator Holmon Wiggins will lean heavily on starting quarterback Marcel Reed to guide the offense, which includes four new offensive line starters and Alabama transfer wide receiver Isaiah Horton.
Horton will get a chance to face his former team when Texas A&M travels to Tuscaloosa to take on Alabama on Saturday, October 24. That matchup will mark the first time the programs have met since the 2023 season, a game remembered for a 26-20 road loss that came down to the final possession. Historically, Alabama holds a dominant 13-3 all-time edge over Texas A&M, and the Aggies’ last road win against the Crimson Tide came in the 2012 season, when Johnny Manziel led a stellar A&M roster to a 29-24 victory that helped cement Manziel’s Heisman Trophy.
Alabama’s starting quarterback for the season will likely be decided in the weeks leading up to the opener. With Kalen DeBoer’s background in quarterback development, Alabama’s offense should be at least average to above-average, potentially featuring freshman Keelon Russell or Austin Mack at the helm. If the first option doesn’t pan out, it could create an opportunity for Texas A&M to capitalize.
Texas A&M will arrive in Tuscaloosa aiming to be 7-0, or at a minimum 6-1, before the tougher November slate. This past week, SEC Unfiltered hosts Chris Phillips and Cole Thompson highlighted Texas A&M vs. Alabama and Texas A&M’s regular-season finale against Texas as two games that could shape the 2026 SEC football season. The matchup against the Longhorns is especially pivotal, given that a win could bolster either program’s CFP hopes, but the importance of wrapping up road games with a winning record ahead of November remains a key consideration.
Defeating Alabama in Tuscaloosa is viewed by many as a potential make-or-break moment for the Aggies, underscoring how pivotal that early conference test could be for their overall trajectory in 2026.
