Good morning, Birdland. Yesterday was a perfect day to be an Orioles fan. The team earned its third straight win, closed the gap to two games behind the final wild-card spot, and highlighted several young players that have the front office buzzing about their potential. Of course every team loves its draft picks, or else they wouldn’t have chosen them in the first place, but the Orioles did seem to land solid value. They mixed ages and positions well in this draft, something they haven’t consistently done in the past. There are more picks coming today, though they might not be as immediately exciting as the players they’ve already added. Yet more often than not, it’s the later selections that end up shaping a higher-quality draft overall.
On the field, the Orioles delivered one of their most decisive wins of the season. Kyle Bradish was dominant on the mound even without his best stuff, and the offense belted four home runs, accounting for five of the six runs with long balls. Despite an up-and-down first half, Baltimore remains very much in the playoff mix. It’s easy to argue they’ve underperformed so far and that their best baseball lies ahead.
Is that enough for Mike Elias and the front office to go all-in at the trade deadline and add external talent to this roster? Probably not. But the reality is they need to win games, and there’s pressure on everyone—from players to coaches to those making the calls in the front office. A small push in the right direction could be all that’s needed to push this team toward October. A four-game win streak on the final day of the first half would feel like a sign from above.
Honestly, I wouldn’t complain if that’s what happens. It would be refreshing to watch competitive baseball for the next two and a half months, and a bold trade deadline move could help ensure that. Let’s see it.

– Roch Kubatko notes that the Orioles currently sit with an 18.1 percent chance to make the playoffs, per FanGraphs. Considering the rough stretches they’ve endured this season, that figure isn’t terrible, especially with the American League’s overall mediocrity.
– Orioles closer Ryan Helsley avoids elbow surgery; Keegan Akin has a surgeon appointment, per The Baltimore Banner. This is welcome news for Helsley and the Orioles, as Helsley has a player option for 2027 and seems likely to exercise it. If he’s healthy, he could be a key late-inning presence alongside Félix Bautista. Akin’s outlook, however, appears more concerning and may point toward Tommy John surgery.
– Orioles activate Yaramil Hiraldo from the 60-day I.L., via MLB Trade Rumors. Hiraldo adds bullpen depth down in Norfolk as the team continues to bolster its relief corps.
The Orioles also need some bullpen help, and Hiraldo should help in Norfolk while the major-league club seeks more late-inning stability. With the right moves and continued development from the farm system, Baltimore could turn what’s been a fluctuating first half into a strong second half and a memorable playoff push.
