Report – Ajax Take Interest in Out-of-Favor Roma Striker

Artem Dovbyk’s time at Roma is nearing its end, with the Ukrainian striker poised to depart the Stadio Olimpico after spending two seasons with the club. According to Calciomercato, Ajax have entered the chase to sign the 29-year-old, adding a fresh twist to a transfer saga that has gained new momentum. Roma secured Dovbyk’s services in 2024 with a transfer fee reported at around €30.5 million plus a €5.5 million potential in bonuses, a sizable investment that reflected their belief in his potential to solve their scoring woes.
Dovbyk had previously sparkled at Girona, where he claimed La Liga’s Golden Boot for the 2023/24 season, a feat that convinced Roma’s hierarchy that he could be the reliable source of goals they lacked. However, his time in Serie A has been far from seamless. Last season proved challenging for the robust forward, as he managed only 14 league appearances and found the back of the net on three occasions. The disappointing performance left him out of favor with Roma’s manager Gian Piero Gasperini, and it soon became clear that he would be edged out of the first-team picture.
With Dovbyk deemed surplus to requirements, Roma are preparing to move him on. Despite an underwhelming campaign, the club has stood firm on a €23 million asking price, showing little willingness to lower their valuation. The decision to cash in comes as Roma pursue a string of high-profile targets in the current market. The arrival of Donyell Malen on a permanent basis has intensified the club’s tempo to trim the squad and fund new signings. In addition to their interest in Strasbourg’s young star Diego Moreira, Roma have also turned their attention to Chelsea’s outcast Alejandro Garnacho, signaling a broader strategy to rebuild the attacking line with fresh, dynamic options.
The financial calculus for Roma is clear: they need to raise funds through player sales to balance the books and pursue new targets. Dovbyk is expected to be among the first exits, a move that would free up space and resources as they chase multiple high-profile additions. Ajax could offer him regular first-team football, a compelling proposition for a player seeking consistent playing time, but whether they will meet Roma’s €23 million asking price remains uncertain and will be a critical factor in any potential deal.
Meanwhile, there are rumors that Daniele De Rossi is keen to bring Dovbyk to Genoa, a potential destination that could appeal to the player’s desire for more consistent action. However, achieving such a transfer would likely require Roma to adjust their financial demands downward, creating a possible alternative path for Dovbyk beyond the Dutch side. The evolving market situation continues to shape Dovbyk’s future, with Roma actively weighing offers and contemplating their next move as they strive to reshape their attacking options for the coming seasons.
