Two Takeaways From Giants Two-Run Victory

By admin — In News — July 12, 2026

The San Francisco Giants bounced back from a brutal defeat by beating the Colorado Rockies 4-2. Third baseman Casey Schmitt had a standout night, driving in three runs with a home run in the sixth inning. The Giants finally received the reliable pitching they needed, securing their 40th win of the season. Following the tough loss, San Francisco found a lift from two stalwart contributors: Tyler Mahle and JT Brubaker. Mahle earned just his second win of the year, while Brubaker recorded his first career save.
Despite manager Tony Vitello getting ejected, the plan largely went as intended for the Giants. A single swing of the bat broke a 1-1 tie, sending the Giants in front 4-1, a lead they would protect for the remainder of the game. Brubaker did allow a run in the eighth, but it did not blow up into the bullpen disaster that had haunted them the night before.
“Every game I go in confident that I’m going to pitch well, and it just hasn’t been happening,” Mahle told MLB.com. “Today, I made some good pitches. The defense played great and we scored some runs in key moments. That’s what took us over the top today.”
Vitello added, “I’m a big believer that preparation pays off, but I think ultimately since he’s come back off the IL, he’s looked a lot more like himself. If he does that consistently, eventually he’s going to get wins under his belt.”
Brubaker, a 32-year-old with four major-league seasons under his belt dating back to his 2020 debut, already had one career save to his name from that season and three more in 2026 prior to today. The Giants gave him another two-inning save to add to his resume.
After San Francisco tied the game the previous inning, Schmitt delivered the decisive blow with a quick, three-pitch knock against a knuckle curve to left-center. His 18th homer of the year traveled 415 feet and pushed the Giants ahead by a comfortable three runs. It may have been his lone hit of the night, but it was the hit the team needed most. The 27-year-old infielder now has two home runs in his last three games and sits with an .835 OPS in July, illustrating his rising form at a critical point in the season.
As the Giants continue their push, Schmitt’s big swing came at a moment of growing confidence for the club. The victory not only halted a string of losses but also reinforced the positive signs from a pitching staff that finally delivered the consistency they had been seeking. With Mahle providing some much-needed stability on the mound and Brubaker sealing the win with a save, San Francisco showed signs of turning a rough stretch into a productive streak. The team will look to build on this momentum in their upcoming matchups, hoping to continue the path toward a successful finish to the season.
