Mets recall Zach Thornton, option Tobias Myers

The Mets are continuing their reshuffling of the pitching staff, recalling Zach Thornton and optioning Tobias Myers to Triple-A Syracuse. Thornton is slated to start today in the Mets’ final game of the first half against the Red Sox, marking his third Major League start. His first outing against that club was rocky: four and a third innings, four hits including a home run, two walks, yielding four earned runs and taking the loss. His second start, however, offered a marked turnaround, as he worked six solid innings and allowed only one run while striking out seven and issuing a single free pass.
Should the Mets explore trades of some of their starters at the upcoming deadline, and if pitchers like Jonah Tong and Jack Wenninger continue to struggle, Thornton could emerge as a pivotal piece in the rotation through the end of 2026. Myers, meanwhile, has been a frequent shuttle passenger, bouncing between the major league roster and Triple-A on multiple occasions. After a strong spring, Myers opened the season on a solid note before hitting a rough stretch that culminated in a demotion at the end of May. Since his initial optioning, Myers has faced a string of difficulties, with his ERA climbing by more than two runs during this period. These up-and-down performances have left his long-term role with the Mets uncertain, even as the organization continues to weigh its rotation options heading into the latter half of the season and beyond.
