Diamondbacks’ Ketel Marte expected to make decision with no-trade clause

The Diamondbacks are facing a delicate situation. With a 48-47 record and real postseason hopes, they still trail the NL West by 12.5 games and can only reach October baseball through the Wild Card. As the All-Star break approaches, they sit 3.5 games back of a Wild Card spot, and while the August 3 trade deadline could spark a mini-contender push, Arizona may opt to sell this summer. However, veteran reporter Bob Nightengale of USA Today notes that if the D-Backs choose to sell, All-Star second baseman Ketel Marte is unlikely to be dealt, thanks to his no-trade clause.
Nightengale writes that Arizona previously shopped Marte in the winter but pulled him from the market before spring training. Marte now holds 10-and-5 rights and is expected to veto any trades, which the Diamondbacks have informed interested teams. With Marte intent on declining any trade, it appears unlikely the team will move him this summer. The rumors around Marte have persisted for some time; he was even on the trade block last offseason. Yet at this point, Marte does not seem poised to depart.
Unless Marte changes his stance, he plans to block any deal offered for him, even if Arizona would be receptive to a trade. The three-time All-Star and NLCS MVP appears set to remain in Arizona, leveraging his 10-and-5 rights to veto all potential trades this summer. While Marte isn’t enjoying an All-Star-caliber season in 2024, he remains a high-impact player, having produced 19 home runs with a .780 OPS and a 112 OPS+ prior to the break. Arizona signed him to a six-year, $105 million contract through 2030, so barring a drastic change, Marte is likely to stay with the Diamondbacks for the next several years.
In the broader context of MLB trade discussions, Marte’s situation stands in contrast to other star players who have been moved in recent periods, illustrating how a player’s veto rights can shape a team’s deadline plans. For Diamondbacks fans, the question now is whether the club will double down on competing this season or realign its roster with an eye toward 2025 and beyond, knowing Marte’s no-trade stance gives the organization limited flexibility in the event of a midseason offer. As the season progresses toward the trade deadline, all eyes will be on Marte’s decisions and how Arizona navigates a path that balances immediate competitive chances with long-term strategic goals.
