Tarik Skubal reveals true feelings on Tigers amid trade rumors

By admin — In News — July 12, 2026

Tarik Skubal has become the focal point of trade chatter surrounding the Detroit Tigers as July progresses, with rumors about the ace landing on the move this summer. The back-to-back Cy Young winner could be traded, but what does Skubal himself think about his name surfacing in trade talks?
Per USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, Skubal has told close friends that he does not want to leave Detroit. He reportedly wishes to see out the 2026 season with the Tigers and believes they have a legitimate shot at a World Series berth. Nightengale quotes Skubal as saying he has zero appetite to be traded, underscoring his desire to stay in Detroit for the remainder of the season. This stance is somewhat surprising given the significant gap in contract negotiations and Skubal’s potential status as a free agent after 2026.
Skubal has recently declared, “I’ve never lost faith.” The Tigers, currently 44-51 but only 2.5 games out of a Wild Card spot, remain in the playoff hunt, suggesting there is still time for a late push. However, a weak second half of July could push Detroit toward becoming a seller at the trade deadline. If that scenario unfolds, Skubal appears reluctant to be moved, according to Nightengale’s update, and he would prefer to finish the year in Detroit as he continues to believe in the team’s potential.
That said, Skubal does not hold a no-trade clause, meaning the Tigers could still trade him if they decide to, despite his explicit wish to remain with the club. Trading a frontline pitcher like Skubal for nothing in free agency would be a significant misstep if Detroit is not a bona fide postseason contender, especially with the August 3 deadline looming. Nightengale’s report paints Skubal as someone who “badly” wants to see the season through in Detroit and who maintains faith in the current roster.
As the deadline approaches, the Tigers will face a tough balancing act: evaluate the likelihood of a postseason push and weigh the potential return in exchange for Skubal if the team falters. The absence of a no-trade clause gives Detroit leverage, but Skubal’s expressed desire to stay complicates any decision. If Detroit remains out of the playoff picture, the organization may still need to consider whether trading Skubal offers the best path to rebuilding or retooling for future competitiveness, even as Skubal himself hopes to finish the season in Detroit.
Bottom line: Skubal wants to stay, believes in Detroit’s chances, and would prefer to finish the season with the Tigers. Whether the Tigers share that sentiment at the deadline remains to be seen, as they must weigh the risks and rewards of trading a top arm with significant postseason upside versus pursuing a competitive rebuild or push for a true championship run in 2026 and beyond.
