American content creator IShowSpeed has put himself forward for a surprising role with one of the world’s premier nations as the 2030 World Cup approaches. The YouTube star has already carved out a notable presence at this year’s World Cup events in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, becoming a familiar figure on the sidelines and in the stands among a host of other celebrity supporters.
Speed, known for his fervent fandom of Cristiano Ronaldo, even extended his rivalries into light-hearted trolling of Lionel Messi when the Argentine star missed a penalty against Egypt. His involvement in major football exhibitions—participated in by the Sidemen and KSI—has long shown his willingness to engage with the sport beyond mere viewing.
Now he has playfully offered to assist the Indian national team in their quest for a first-ever World Cup appearance. While watching Spain defeat Belgium in a late quarterfinal, the 21-year-old joked about helping India secure a place in the 2030 tournament, which will be hosted largely by Morocco, Spain, and Portugal. He said, “India do need some help. I’ll play for India. I’ll help y’all make it to the next World Cup. Hey India, if y’all want to make it to the next World Cup, Speed’s right here.”
When KSI asked where he would play, Speed floated multiple possibilities: “I’ll play winger. Winger, striker or midfield.” KSI then followed with, “So, just everywhere?” to which Speed replied, “I feel like I’m an attacking midfielder.”
India—home to the world’s most populous population—has never appeared in a FIFA World Cup since their sole participation in 1950, which they ultimately did not proceed with, pulling out less than a month before the tournament began in Brazil. The image of the moment underscores the long odds facing a team that would require a dramatic rise through qualification processes and citizenship eligibility rules to be eligible for World Cup participation.
At the time of the World Cup, India sat at 138 in the FIFA world rankings, and even with the extended format adopted for 2026 and beyond, many observers would be surprised to see India reach the World Cup in 2030. While the notion of Speed donning India’s colors and appearing on football’s biggest stage is entertaining to imagine, the practical realities of national-team eligibility and qualification make such a scenario unlikely in the near term.
Cricket remains India’s dominant sport, but football has a substantial and growing following. The country’s fans dream of one day seeing their nation compete at the World Cup, and who knows what the future holds as football continues to develop a footprint in the Indian sports landscape. For now, Speed’s playful pledge serves as a reminder of the sport’s global reach and the growing appetite in India for a place at football’s grandest stage.
