LAS VEGAS — Every NBA opportunity is something a player should seize with both hands, making the most of the moment when it arrives. Not every talented basketball player earns a path to the league’s highest rung, and that’s an unfortunate reality in a fiercely competitive sport. For Matt Rogers, the former Patriot League tournament MVP, the odds seemed even longer after he tore his ACL in American University’s First Four matchup against Mount St. Mary’s in 2025. He had just enjoyed a standout season, averaging 16.7 points and 5.5 rebounds while shooting 40.3 percent from deep, before the devastating injury altered his trajectory and complicated his rehabilitation process.
Fast forward to the 2026 summer, and Rogers finds himself with the Philadelphia 76ers in the NBA summer league, embracing the chance to prove himself once again. “I’m just blessed to be out here,” Rogers said with genuine enthusiasm following a summer league win over the Indiana Pacers on a Saturday night. “This is my first time really playing in 16 months. I’m coming back from an ACL tear. So, I’m just happy to be out here and showcase my skills again because I was out for over a year. Even if I don’t get an NBA opportunity, overseas opportunities, whatever it may be. So, I’m just happy to be out here and showcase my skills again.”
Rogers delivered in the win over the Pacers, contributing 17 points off the bench and knocking down a crucial three late in the fourth quarter to provided a sizable lift for Philadelphia. The performance underscored the resilience that has carried him this far—if he can maintain this level after such a serious injury, it could signal a meaningful breakthrough, whether in the NBA with the Sixers, elsewhere in the league, or on an overseas circuit.
He spoke candidly about the mental grind of rehab, a process that can stretch months and test even the most determined players. “Those first five to six months are really hard because you’re doing the same thing repeatedly over and over and over again,” Rogers explained. “It’s really just staying down, staying humble, and really finding that inner self, that inner voice to really push you through everything. It’s not gonna last forever. There are going to be lows, but there will also be highs—you’re going to feel like you’re back at it again. So it was just really staying humble, staying hungry. I’m just excited to be out here.”
In addition to his scoring, Rogers showcased a keen basketball IQ and an understanding of how to produce buckets without relying solely on creating shots for himself. He demonstrated a knack for finding easy opportunities through intelligent cutting, off-ball movement, and timing. His ability to read defenses and react quickly can help him carve out a niche in the modern game, where off-ball movement and efficient scoring are highly valued. “I just like to read the defense,” Rogers said. “A lot of guys like to stand around. Coach preaches keeping offside ball movement and cutting at the right time. We have a lot of ball screens on the sideline. So, just being able to read that, cut through, watching the defender’s head. So, I love doing that. I love being able to move without the ball. I don’t get it all the time, but when I do, I’m gonna be ready for it.”
Looking ahead, Rogers will continue his NBA audition in the summer league on Tuesday, when he faces the Houston Rockets. Even if a long-term spot with Philadelphia doesn’t materialize immediately, the 76ers and their fans will be watching closely as he tries to translate his Summer League performance into a professional return to the court—whether in the NBA, overseas, or another path that allows him to showcase his abilities on a larger stage.
Rogers’s journey illustrates the grit required to rebound from a major injury and reestablish oneself at the highest level of basketball. The combination of his shooting ability, court awareness, and off-ball movement could give him a distinct edge in a league that continually rewards players who can contribute without the ball in their hands. As he continues to push through the recovery process and seize opportunities in the summer league, Rogers remains determined to maximize every chance that comes his way, proving that a setback can become a powerful catalyst for a renewed ascent.
