The Philadelphia Phillies are aiming to strengthen their lineup before the August 3 trade deadline, with a focus on adding an outfield bat after Adolis Garcia’s season-ending injury. Philadelphia has been linked to several outfield targets, and USA Today MLB insider Bob Nightengale reported that the Phillies have turned their attention to Lourdes Gurriel Jr. of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Nightengale noted that the Phillies have identified Gurriel as a potential right-handed hitting outfielder alongside options like Angels outfielder Jo Adell, though Gurriel has produced a .222 batting average with two homers, 20 RBIs and a .565 OPS through 45 games after missing time earlier in the season.
Gurriel could provide a significant offensive boost for the Phillies and fill a major need in their outfield, even if his defense isn’t elite. He’s demonstrated his power-hitting potential, with a career high of 24 homers and 82 RBIs achieved in 2023, and he has routinely offered 15-plus homers and 70-plus RBIs. Gurriel is in the final year of his three-year, $42 million contract with the Diamondbacks, and there is a club option for $14 million for next season. Given the Phillies’ clear requirement for an outfield bat, especially in light of Garcia’s season-ending injury, Gurriel’s name has merit as a potential acquisition.
Ahead of the MLB Trade Deadline, ESPN insider Jeff Passan cited the outfield as the Phillies’ biggest need. He outlined the current depth chart and explained that Brandon Marsh has helped the lineup stabilize beside Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper, but Justin Crawford has not emerged as a long-term solution, and Derek Hill has struggled to hit consistently. With Garcia out of the picture for the season, the Phillies remain open to multiple outfield candidates, and Gurriel is among the latest players generating interest in Philadelphia. Passan, however, highlighted Jung Hoo Lee of the San Francisco Giants as perhaps the best fit for the Phillies among possible options.
In other developments, the 2026 MLB Draft began on a Saturday, and the Phillies used the occasion to add another piece to their system. They selected high school shortstop Tyler Spangler with the 36th overall pick. Philadelphia’s selection came 10 spots lower than their original position due to a surcharge threshold under the Competitive Balance Tax, but the club was determined to secure a player they had identified well in advance. Phillies assistant general manager of amateur scouting Brian Barber expressed strong enthusiasm for the pick, noting that Spangler has long been on the organization’s radar. They described him as a hitter with a current emphasis on contact, while acknowledging the potential for additional power as he fills out and grows into his frame. Barber emphasized that Spangler is a projectable right-handed hitter whose development will be watched closely as he progresses through the minor leagues, with the organization believing his size and strength could translate into further power down the line.
