49ers minority owner Vinod Khosla issued an important stipulation after Seahawks’ purchase

Vinod Khosla, the co-founder of Sun Microsystems in the 1980s, along with the Khosla family, agreed on Saturday to purchase the Seattle Seahawks for a reported record-breaking $9.623 billion. Previously, Khosla was a minority owner of the San Francisco 49ers, but that changed as part of the new arrangement. An NFL memo states that Khosla must divest his 3.1 percent stake in the 49ers as part of the Seahawks deal.
The sale followed a comprehensive process led by Allen & Co. The Estate of Paul Allen reached an agreement to sell the Seattle Seahawks to the Khosla family and several limited partners, pending membership review and approval. Allen & Co. noted very strong interest in the club throughout the process, with the Khosla group emerging as the preferred buyer among multiple qualified bidders. As part of the deal, the Khosla family would need to relinquish its limited partner interest in the 49ers.
The Khosla family comprises Neeru Khosla, Vinod Khosla, and their son Neal Khosla, with Neeru expected to serve as the controlling owner. Neeru is an educator and entrepreneur, while Vinod Khosla is a technology investor who co-founded Sun Microsystems and now runs Khosla Ventures, the firm he established. Neal Khosla is the CEO of Curai, an artificial intelligence-driven healthcare company, and would be anticipated to take on a significant leadership role within the Seahawks ownership group.
Allen & Co. has kept the league informed throughout the process, and Commissioner and League staff have held discussions with the Khosla family and their representatives. The league has also begun reviewing key transaction documents and conducting customary due diligence on the prospective ownership group. As this process advances, updates will be provided to the Finance Committee, which will review the transaction before the membership’s formal consideration.
If you have any questions, please let us know. The Khosla acquisition is likely to raise the public profile of Vinod Khosla, who previously commented on the deal with a tweet suggesting, “Also excited to see the money all go to a non-profit.” While it is expected that Khosla will liquidate 49ers assets to complete the Seahawks purchase, there was noticeable confusion on Saturday about his status in relation to the 49ers amid the announcement.
The Seattle Seahawks sale marks a high-profile shift in ownership, with the Khosla family poised to take control of an NFL franchise, subject to the completion of due diligence, the finalization of transaction documents, and the necessary membership approvals. The arrangement underscores a broader trend of technology-sector investors expanding into professional sports ownership, linking high-profile tech leadership with one of the NFL’s most storied franchises.
