Doubt over Ederson move as Man Utd deny deal is off

Manchester United’s drawn-out pursuit of Ederson has been cast into serious doubt amid conflicting reports about whether the deal is dead. Sky Sport Italia and Fabrizio Romano both claim talks have collapsed, while insiders at United insist the move remains on the table. The Brazilian goalkeeper had initially seemed destined for Old Trafford. In June, Sky Sports News reported that United had agreed a package worth £34 million upfront plus £3.8 million in bonuses, with all documents already completed. Ederson himself appeared to project confidence after Brazil’s group-stage victory over Haiti, saying, “Certainly, everything is almost done.”
Yet the medical side of the equation created a major hurdle. United asked for additional, more extensive testing after Brazil’s elimination, apparently to address concerns about his recent injury history. Those examinations were completed in the ensuing days. What followed was a dramatic turn of events. Romano claimed that United informed Atalanta that they were withdrawing and had “changed their plans,” leaving Ederson now expected to report back to Maurizio Sarri’s squad in Bergamo.
Atalanta, however, rejected the fitness narrative. The Serie A club maintains that Ederson is 100% fit, pointing out that he was part of Brazil’s World Cup squad, and they believe United simply had a change of heart. They are reportedly preparing a contract extension to keep him. United has not accepted that the deal is finished. Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg relayed that club sources deny the transfer is completely off the table, insisting a deal remains possible even if the process has grown more complex.
This ambiguity comes amid United’s busy midfield overhaul. The club has already secured a £48 million deal for Chelsea’s Andrey Santos, and Wolves’ Joao Gomes has been linked as a potential alternative should the Ederson move falter. Ederson’s contract with Atalanta runs until 2027, leaving his long-term future unresolved as the transfer window continues.
