Washington’s John Richardson Adds to DB Riches With New 4-Star Commit

By admin — In News — July 12, 2026

For the third straight recruiting cycle, Washington Huskies secondary coach John Richardson has landed one of the nation’s elite defensive backs. On Saturday, four-star cornerback Censere Gaylord from IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, chose Washington over Georgia and Georgia Tech, adding a California-native talent to a growing pipeline of signed, developed, and drafted defensive backs under Richardson during the last three years. Gaylord, a 6-foot, 170-pound senior, sits at No. 112 in the national rankings and is listed as the No. 13 cornerback in the 2027 class according to 247Sports. He stands as the highest-ranked commit to the Huskies in this cycle, ahead of four-star wide receiver Tre Moore, and marks the third-highest-ranked cornerback to pledge to Richardson in the past three classes, including 2027.
Gaylord’s commitment follows the signing of four-star Rahsjon Duncan from McClymonds High School, who became the program’s highest-ranked cornerback to join UW and Richardson since he arrived in Montlake with Jedd Fisch from Arizona in January 2024. He is joined by four-star Dylan Robinson in 2025, who is projected to be one of two starting outside cornerbacks this fall for defensive coordinator Ryan Walters, opposite Virginia transfer Emmanuel Karnley. As a junior, Gaylord showcased his versatility and playmaking ability by generating five interceptions and multiple tackles for loss. He also demonstrated strong run support and open-field tackling while remaining competitive in press coverage and when the ball was in the air, establishing himself as one of the top players at his position in his class.
There is a possibility Gaylord could follow a similar trajectory to that of Robinson, who appeared in 12 of 13 games for the Huskies as a true freshman in 2025, behind veteran starters Tacario Davis and Ephesians Prysock, both of whom were selected in the 2026 NFL draft. That path would align with Washington’s ongoing effort to stockpile defensive back talent, continuing a trend of Huskies corners earning opportunities at the next level. Regardless of whether Gaylord starts immediately or contributes as a rotational piece, his arrival adds to a continuing string of high-caliber defensive backs being secured and developed by Richardson and Fisch’s staff, underscoring Washington’s commitment to building a formidable secondary.
This development fits into a broader narrative of the Huskies’ recent success in recruiting and developing defensive backs who can translate into professional opportunities. Richardson’s eye for talent, paired with Fisch’s program-building approach, has yielded a pipeline of cornerbacks who are not only contributing at the college level but also catching the attention of NFL evaluators. As Washington continues to emphasize depth and playmaking potential in the secondary, Gaylord’s addition strengthens a position group that has become a hallmark of the program’s contemporary identity.
