Vitality Blast Women’s League 2 Final: Glamorgan triumph at Sophia Gardens as they beat Gloucestershire by 32 runs to lift the title. Glamorgan posted 154-6 from their 20 overs with a pivotal 79-run alliance between Bethan Gammon and Megan Sturge shaping the innings in Cardiff. Gloucestershire, chasing 155, were bowled out for 122 in 17 overs, with Patel top-scoring on 52 amid a late Albion of wickets, and Glamorgan claiming the trophy in their first season as a professional outfit.
Gloucestershire won the toss and opted to field, a decision that looked smart early on as Glamorgan wrestled with the new-ball conditions. Captain Lauren Parfitt fell cheaply for eight when dismissed by Charlie Phillips, caught by Amelie Munday. A chaotic run-out moments later saw Daisy Jeanes depart, amplifying the twists and turns of the opening spell. Yet Glamorgan steadied, with Sturge and Gammon stitching together a vital partnership that steadied the innings and laid a solid foundation for a competitive total.
Sturge and Gammon’s 79-run stand put Glamorgan in command, as the home side moved beyond 100 with confidence. Phillips then delivered a crucial breakthrough, removing Sturge at deep point to leave Glamorgan 105-3 and shift the balance briefly in Gloucestershire’s favor. The innings continued to wobble as captain Liv Daniels pinned Megan McColl and dismissed her with a sharp catch, highlighting Gloucestershire’s ingenuity in the field. Daisy Mullan soon followed, dismissed by Phillips for her sixth wicket of the day, and Glamorgan’s batting woes looked set to derail their hopes of lifting the trophy.
Gammon then reached an entertaining 69 before falling to a catch at the deep, the final flourish of Glamorgan’s innings capped by Mullan’s dismissal in the final over. Glamorgan finished 154-6, leaving Gloucestershire with a challenging target against a high-caliber Glamorgan attack.
In pursuit, Gloucestershire’s start was far from ideal. Munday, the hero of the semi-final with a 71, fell for a first-ball duck at the hands of Gemma Porter, testing the patience of the chase from the outset. Porter soon struck again, taking Reddy’s catch at mid-wicket as Gloucestershire slipped to 29 in the powerplay. Glamorgan’s bowlersmaintained pressure throughout the innings, with the fielding side’s discipline and precision proving decisive as the chase failed to gain momentum.
The momentum swung decisively in Glamorgan’s favour when Patel produced a masterclass with the bat. Her 52 off a brisk innings provided Gloucestershire with a glimmer of hope, but the momentum was short-lived, as eight boundaries and a string of misfields kept the pressure on the visitors. An over that began with back-to-back no-balls from Sara Phillips and Megan McColl added to the compressive tension at Sophia Gardens, with 19 runs coming from that over and risk hovering over Glamorgan’s chances. Yet three timely wickets—followed by a series of quick dismissals—pushed Glamorgan back onto the edge of securing the win.
Patel, though, steadied and delivered a crucial innings for Gloucestershire, but it was not enough to overhaul Glamorgan’s total. The dismissal of Patel with Glamorgan needing just a handful of more runs sealed Gloucestershire’s fate; Phillips plucked the ball skyward and clutched it amid a celebration as Glamorgan completed a 32-run victory.
Glamorgan’s triumph marks their first trophy in this format since entering the professional ranks, signaling a strong statement of intent for the club as they prepare for the next season. The match showcased Glamorgan’s depth, with Gammon and Sturge’s early alliance laying the groundwork, Phillips’ all-round contribution with the ball, and Porter’s discipline in the powerplay proving pivotal in restricting Gloucestershire’s chase. Gloucestershire’s batting effort, led by Patel’s mature strike, was admirable but ultimately not enough to overcome Glamorgan’s incisive bowling and fielding, leaving Glamorgan as deserved champions of the Vitality Blast Women’s League 2 Final.
