The Green Bay Packers have extended off-ball linebacker Isaiah McDuffie’s contract through the 2027 season, extending his stay with the organization beyond the current year despite notable defensive coaching changes. McDuffie was already under contract for 2026 after signing a two-year deal last offseason, but the Packers’ front office, led by general manager Brian Gutekunst, opted to add another year to his deal. According to Over the Cap, the new money value of the contract is $4.85 million, with $1.5 million fully guaranteed as a new signing bonus. The agreement also sets McDuffie’s base salary for 2027 at $2.9 million, plus a $750,000 roster bonus if he remains on the roster on the third day of the 2027 league year. In addition, the package includes $600,000 in per-game roster bonuses in 2027 and a $100,000 workout bonus.
The extension also slightly reduces his 2026 cap hit from $4.975 million to $4.725 million, creating a little extra cap room for Green Bay. From a financial standpoint, the deal makes sense for the team by locking in a trusted contributor for at least two more seasons without a burdensome commitment.
This decision stands out for several reasons. McDuffie, a sixth-round pick by Green Bay in 2021, re-signed with the Packers largely because of his connection to former defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley. The two had worked together at Boston College prior to Hafley’s arrival in Green Bay, and that familiarity helped position McDuffie as a reliable piece within the defense. Hafley has since moved on to become the Miami Dolphins’ head coach, and Green Bay hired Jonathan Gannon to replace him. Yet the front office’s choice to extend McDuffie signals that the organization’s confidence in the linebacker goes beyond any single defensive scheme.
At 26 years old, McDuffie isn’t exactly a young building block in the traditional sense, but Green Bay clearly values what he brings to the roster enough to secure him with a multi-year commitment. In the 2024 season, McDuffie appeared in significant roles, and in 2025 he remained a versatile presence on both defense and special teams. He logged 45% of the defensive snaps and 72% of the special-teams snaps last year, with the latter being particularly important to his overall value. As a depth piece on defense and a crucial contributor on special teams, he fills multiple roles that suit the Packers’ needs.
McDuffie’s 2025 stat line reflected solid production for a rotational linebacker: 59 tackles, 28 stops, and eight pressures. His tackling grade from PFF stood at 75.8, with a run defense grade of 69.1. Coverage has typically been a weaker area for him, but he did post a career-high 63.0 PFF coverage grade in the 2025 season. When targeted, he allowed a passer rating of 89.3, which is respectable for an off-ball linebacker and indicative of his overall competence in pass defense given his role and responsibilities.
The Packers have also undergone significant changes at the linebacker position this offseason. They allowed Quay Walker to depart in free agency, with Walker signing with the Las Vegas Raiders, and Green Bay made additional moves to bolster the unit, including adding new pieces through trades and the reorganization of their defensive staff. The decision to extend McDuffie underscores Green Bay’s intention to maintain continuity and rely on a player who has proven to be a versatile contributor on special teams and a capable depth option on defense, regardless of the shifting tactical leadership.
