Astros’ Brice Matthews leaves game against Rangers with left knee injury

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Brice Matthews, the center fielder for the Houston Astros, exited the game against the Texas Rangers on Sunday after suffering a left knee injury when he crashed into the outfield wall while trying to backtrack on a ball hit by Josh Jung. The misplay allowed the ball to slip from Matthews’ glove and roll for a triple as the ball caromed off the wall. The moment unfolded with Matthews kneeling on his right knee for several minutes as he received attention from trainer Eric Velazquez, while Astros manager Joe Espada stood nearby, closely observing the scene.
Despite the injury, Matthews managed to finish the inning, retiring one more batter before being removed for a pinch hitter in the following frame. In the second inning, the Astros tapped Taylor Trammell to take over in the lineup.
Matthews, who is 24 years old, hails from Houston and is a graduate of Atascocita High School in nearby Humble. Over 81 games this season, he has posted a batting average of .197. He made his major league debut last season and has since appeared in 13 games at the big-league level.
The injury update left some concern within the Astros’ camp as they await more information on Matthews’ condition. The organization will likely provide further details on the severity of the knee issue and any required treatment, as well as a potential timeline for his return to the field. For now, the team will move forward with the lineup adjustments necessitated by the absence of their young outfielder, hoping that the injury is not as serious as it appeared during the moment of impact.
As the MLB landscape continues to monitor the situation, the broader news around the league points to continued emphasis on monitoring players’ health and ensuring proper medical assessments following on-field incidents. Additional updates from the Astros and MLB will be forthcoming as more information becomes available.
