Diamondbacks place RHP Zac Gallen on 15-day IL with elbow inflammation

By DOUG PADILLA — In News — July 12, 2026

The Arizona Diamondbacks announced a major league roster move on Sunday, placing right-hander Zac Gallen on the 15-day injured list due to inflammation in his right elbow. In a corresponding move, left-hander Mitch Bratt was recalled to start against the Los Angeles Dodgers in the series finale before the All-Star break. The decision to shift Gallen to the IL came after manager Torey Lovullo indicated a change to the rotation late on Saturday.
Gallen, 30, has had a rough stretch for more than a month, failing to secure a win in eight consecutive starts while posting an 8.24 ERA over that span, a stretch that began on May 29. For the season, he is 3-9 with a 6.34 ERA across 19 starts. Lovullo explained that Gallen felt something in his elbow and spoke up, prompting the team to have him examined. The Diamondbacks plan to establish a recovery timeline during the All-Star break, with the goal of returning the durable right-hander to health as soon as possible.
Across eight major league seasons, Gallen has compiled a 69-61 record with a 3.83 ERA over 195 career starts, including his time with both the Miami Marlins and the Diamondbacks. His peak season to date came in 2023 when he earned a National League All-Star selection and finished third in NL Cy Young Award voting, highlighting the expectations the club has for him when healthy.
Bratt, meanwhile, is stepping back onto the Diamondbacks’ active roster for only the second time in his major league tenure. The 23-year-old made his big-league debut on June 24, delivering a solid performance by allowing one run over three innings in his start against the St. Louis Cardinals. His return to the rotation provides Lovullo with an additional left-handed option as the team navigates the absence of Gallen.
The move underscores how the Diamondbacks are managing a rotating staff while they assess Gallen’s elbow issue and determine an appropriate path to rehabilitation. As they approach the All-Star break, the club will monitor his progress, adjust the rotation as needed, and hope to have him back in the picture later this season if his symptoms subside and his medical evaluation supports a timely return.
