NEW YORK (AP) — Francisco Lindor misplayed a potential game-ending grounder for an error that opened the door to Boston’s two-run ninth inning, and Anthony Siegler followed with a sacrifice fly in the 10th as the Red Sox extended their winning streak to nine by defeating the New York Mets 3-2 on Sunday. Boston (46-48) completed its second 9-game trip of the franchise, matching the franchise mark set once from July 29 to Aug. 7, 1977. The Red Sox are enjoying their longest winning streak since a 10-game run from July 4-13 last year, having won 14 of 16 and 17 of 22.
New York fell for the 16th time in 22 games and, at 40-57, matched its season-low of 17 games under .500. The Mets, who began the season with baseball’s highest payroll, had not been 17 under at the All-Star break since 1995, when they stood 25-44 at that juncture.
Boston carried a pair of hitless innings into the eighth, blanked on two hits through eight thanks to Zach Thompson and Luke Weaver, and then rallied in the ninth against Devin Williams. Ceddanne Rafaela led off with a single, and Lindor’s miscue on Romy Gonzalez’s grounder to shortstop bounced off his chest, keeping the inning alive. Caleb Durbin and Andrew Monasterio drew walks, loading the bases, and Jarren Duran capped the rally with a blooping tying single that landed just in front of sliding right fielder Carson Benge.
In the 10th, automatic runner Masataka Yoshida moved to third on Connor Wong’s sacrifice against Brooks Raley (4-4) before sprinting home on Siegler’s liner to left for the decisive run.
Aroldis Chapman (1-3) worked a one-hit ninth, and Garrett Whitlock secured his second save with a clean 1-2-3 frame. Lindor contributed an RBI double in the first and a homer in the sixth for the Mets. Boston starter Peyton Tolle yielded one run while fanning seven over 3 2/3 innings.
Looking ahead, the Red Sox will open the second half Friday at home against Tampa Bay. The Mets are scheduled to play at Philadelphia in Thursday’s only game on the slate.
