Yanks beat Nats 5-3 thanks to bases-clearing triple from Ben Rice

The Yankees (54-42) defeated the Nationals (48-49) 5-3 to complete the road series sweep as they head into the All-Star break. Despite the win, New York still sits three games behind the Tampa Bay Rays in the American League East standings.
Surging young star James Wood gave Washington an early spark, crushing a leadoff homer in the first inning. He tattooed a Will Warren fastball 434 feet to center field, marking Wood’s third homer of the three-game series against the Yankees.
New York’s offense answered back in the fifth, seizing the lead on a two-out rally. Cody Bellinger started the scoring with a double to left off Nationals starter Cade Cavalli. Jazz Chisholm Jr. followed with a single to bring Bellinger home and tie the game at 1-1. After Chisholm advanced to second on a wild pitch, Yankees catcher Austin Wells singled to drive in Chisholm and put the Yankees ahead 2-1.
Warren went five innings, allowing four hits and one earned run—the Wood homer—while recording two strikeouts and walking two over 83 pitches. He was replaced by left-handed reliever Tim Hill, who surrendered a pinch-hit home run to Curtis Mead in the sixth, tying the game at 2-2.
In the seventh, with Angel Chivilli recording two outs, a fielding error by Chisholm on a potential inning-ending groundout kept the Nationals alive and allowed pinch runner Nasim Nunez to score from second, giving Washington a 3-2 lead. Lefty reliever Ryan Yarbrough entered and limited the damage.
The Yankees mounted a two-out rally in the eighth. Max Schuemann started with a single and promptly stole second. Trent Grisham followed with a walk, bringing up Ben Rice—unquestionably a clutch at this moment for the Yankees. Rice delivered a long fly to the opposite-field that Daylen Lile couldn’t snag as he leapt at the left-field wall. Rice then sprinted around to complete a two-run triple, giving New York a 4-3 lead. The threat ended with a Jasson Dominguez infield pop fly, leaving Rice stranded at third.
In the ninth, the Yankees added an insurance run. Bellinger started with a single and Chisholm followed with a double to put runners in scoring position with nobody out. Jose Caballero lofted a sacrifice fly to deep right to score Bellinger, and Paul Goldschmidt drew a walk to load the bases with one out. Unfortunately, the Yankees couldn’t extend the lead, and they headed to the bottom of the frame with a 5-3 edge.
Paul Blackburn took the ball in the eighth inning with the high-leverage relievers Fernando Cruz and David Bednar resting. He retired Washington’s heart of the order without allowing a baserunner, tallying two strikeouts to preserve the lead. Blackburn carried that momentum into the ninth, facing the minimum number of hitters to seal the victory for the Yankees.
The result extends New York’s momentum heading into the break, even as they still trail the Rays in the division. Rice’s late-inning heroics and the bullpen’s steady work, especially Blackburn’s shutdown innings, underpinned a resilient team performance that secured the series sweep on the road. As the All-Star break approaches, the Yankees will look to carry this into the second half of the season.
