Mets Lose Again, 3-2, On Lindor Error, Williams Blown Save

The New York Mets wrapped up the brutal first half of their season with another painful defeat as the Boston Red Sox rallied from a late deficit in the ninth inning, thanks to a blown save by Devin Williams and an error by shortstop Francisco Lindor, ultimately winning 3-2 in ten innings. Early on, Lindor appeared to provide the spark for a positive day at the plate. A.J. Ewing opened the scoring by doubling off Red Sox starter Payton Tolle, and Lindor followed suit to drive in Ewing and give the Mets a 1-0 lead. That would be the only scoring for the next several frames as Thornton faced Tolle, then Brayan Bello in a planned short outing to manage Tolle’s total innings for the day.
Thornton delivered an encouraging performance, especially given his uneven beginnings. He worked seven innings, allowing only two hits and two walks while striking out five, keeping the Red Sox off balance and silencing their bats over the majority of the contest. Lindor extended the Mets’ lead in the sixth with a solo homer off Bello, boosting the advantage to 2-0. Both Red Sox pitchers were effective, but Thornton was the standout, handing the ball to his bullpen after eight innings.
Luke Weaver, who has been nearly untouchable for more than two months, did not disappoint. He pitched a clean inning, recording a strikeout, before handing control to closer Devin Williams for the ninth. What followed was a defining moment that shifted the game’s momentum. Williams began with a leadoff single by Cedanne Rafaela and then encountered trouble when Lindor misplayed a potential double-play ball with one out, setting the stage for a costly inning. Williams also walked two batters, narrowing the Mets’ lead to 2-1.
The tie was completed when Jarren Duran blooped a pop fly to right that, in the infield with the corners in, dropped for a single, allowing the tying run to score as Carson Benge’s aggressive sprint to the ball prevented a secure out. It marked another brutal blown save for Williams, a recurring theme in recent weeks, as the Red Sox scrambled back to even the score. Aroldis Chapman entered in the bottom of the ninth and pitched a clean frame, sending the game to extras.
In the tenth, the Red Sox captured the advantage in a strategic manner. Masataka Yoshida started the frame as the ghost runner and was advanced by a sacrifice bunt from Connor Wong. Anthony Seigler followed with a sacrifice fly, pushing Boston ahead 3-2. The Mets could not respond in their half of the inning, going down in order against Garrett Whitlock, sealing a 3-2 final in ten innings and delivering a series sweep to the Red Sox.
For Mets fans, the result underscored the enduring ugliness of the season’s first half, a reminder of the team’s ongoing struggles to salvage wins from late-inning collapses and close calls. The defeat extended the Mets’ troubling stretch and kept the franchise searching for consistency as they head toward the second half of the schedule. Meanwhile, Boston’s rally capped a strong performance that completed the series sweep and offered a glimmer of momentum for a club building on late-season resilience. The game highlighted how one misplayed grounder, a costly walk, and a blown save can transform a near-win into a disappointing loss, shaping the narrative of both teams as they move forward.
