Newcastle United have entered the race to land Parma’s goalkeeper Zion Suzuki as they seek to bolster their options between the posts this summer. The Magpies are aiming to strengthen their goalkeeping department after Nick Pope endured a challenging campaign, and they have already secured Ewen Jaouen from Reims. However, Jaouen is considered not yet ready to be the regular starter, prompting Newcastle to explore other targets.
According to journalist Matteo Moretto, Newcastle have inquired about Suzuki’s availability, though they face competition from several clubs, including Leeds United. Moretto shared the update on Fabrizio Romano’s Italian YouTube channel, noting that Suzuki will weigh multiple project options before making a decision, while Parma will evaluate offers from a financial standpoint.
Suzuki moved to Parma in 2024 and delivered a promising first season, contributing to the club’s fight against relegation. Yet his form declined in the following campaign. In Europe’s top seven leagues, Suzuki stood in the 55th percentile for save percentage, trailing Pope, who ranked in the 63rd percentile. Pope’s superior shot-stopping efficiency was further highlighted by PSxG-GA, where Pope ranked 58th compared with Suzuki’s 40th percentile, indicating that Pope prevented more goals relative to the expected baseline.
In terms of possession-adjusted interceptions, Pope also led, finishing in the 81st percentile versus Suzuki’s 66th, suggesting Pope is more active in breaking up opposition play. Nonetheless, Suzuki surpassed Pope in completed passes, underscoring his comfort and effectiveness with the ball at his feet.
From Newcastle’s perspective, the priority should be to secure a goalkeeper who offers a meaningful upgrade over Pope, rather than pursuing Suzuki as a standalone project. One potential candidate who has drawn attention is Manchester City’s James Trafford, whom the Magpies have reportedly been exploring, though no formal approach has yet been made. The decision will hinge on whether Suzuki represents a compelling long-term investment or whether a more proven goalkeeper is required to raise Newcastle’s level between the posts.
As the summer window progresses, Newcastle fans will be watching whether the club moves decisively for a goalkeeper who can deliver consistent high-level performances and reduce the risk of conceding goals, or whether they will opt to pursue other targets that might align more closely with their strategic and financial considerations.
