Cubs draft LSU baseball signee Dylan Blomker in fifth round

Another LSU baseball signee was selected on Sunday, marking the fourth time this draft cycle that LSU has heard its name called. The Chicago Cubs chose Dylan Blomker in the fifth round, with the pick at No. 159 overall. The right-handed pitcher had been the fourth LSU signee to hear his name called during the draft, and the assigned slot value for Blomker’s selection is $441,300. His name joined those of Logan Schmidt, Jensen Hirschkorn, and Wesley Roberson, who were all drafted on Saturday within the first four rounds. In addition to Blomker, LSU also had former players Derek Curiel, Jake Brown, and Deven Sheerin drafted on Saturday, further highlighting the program’s presence in this year’s event.
Interestingly, Blomker’s selection did not align with the expectations of MLB.com or ESPN, as neither outlet had ranked him as a prospect, making his draft placement earlier than many scouts anticipated. Blomker hails from La Cuerva High School in New Mexico, where he distinguished himself by earning the state’s 2026 Gatorade Player of the Year award. His pitch arsenal features a fastball that can reach up to 96 miles per hour and a slider, giving him a well-rounded set of weapons on the mound.
Given the round and slot values associated with his pick, there is a strong likelihood that Blomker will bypass college and sign with the Cubs organization. In professional baseball, teams rarely expend a fifth-round selection on a player they do not expect to sign, since such a choice represents a significant investment and a firm commitment to bringing the player into the organization.
This development follows LSU’s notable presence in the draft this year, with multiple signees and alumni hearing their names called in close proximity across the two opening days of the event. Blomker’s trajectory after his selection remains to be seen, but his athletic profile and late-round pick position suggest that the Cubs believe he has the upside to contribute at the professional level sooner rather than later.
