India on brink of historic Lord’s Test victory after Yastika Bhatia’s record-breaking century

India Women moved to the brink of a historic maiden Test victory at Lord’s after a dominant third day, powered by Yastika Bhatia’s record-breaking maiden century before the bowlers restrained England to 130/6 in pursuit of an improbable 457-run target. With just four wickets separating them from scripting history at the Home of Cricket, Harmanpreet Kaur’s side ended the day firmly in control despite a spirited lower-order resistance from Amy Jones and Mady Villiers.
Resuming Day 3 with a healthy first-innings lead, India continued to pile on the runs even as England enjoyed a brighter first session with the ball. Lauren Bell bowled Smriti Mandhana for 70 early on, and soon dismissed Jemimah Rodrigues as well. Sophie Ecclestone then trapped Harmanpreet Kaur lbw, briefly nudging England back into the contest. Yet Yastika Bhatia remained unfazed, showing remarkable composure and elegant strokeplay. The left-hander threaded together a composed innings to bring up her maiden Test century, becoming the first woman to score a Test hundred at Lord’s. Her 113 off 158 balls also marked the highest score by an Indian woman in the third or fourth innings of a Test match.
Ecclestone, the England spinner, fought tirelessly and collected her fourth five-wicket haul in Women’s Tests, but with limited support from the other end, India continued to dominate. After Bhatia’s dismissal, Richa Ghosh entered with intent, finishing unbeaten on 50 off 52 balls to inject fresh momentum into the innings and put the attack on the England bowlers. With India’s lead swelling beyond 450, captain Harmanpreet Kaur declared at 341/7, leaving England with a daunting 457-run target to chase or salvage.
The Indian bowlers then imposed immediate pressure on England’s top order. Debutant Kranti Gaud and Sayali Satghare paired up to deliver another excellent new-ball spell, taking out openers Tammy Beaumont and Maia Bouchier inside the first four overs. Beaumont’s dismissal also marked the end of her international career, and former skipper Heather Knight, playing her final Test before retirement, was dismissed by Kranti Gaud, prompting a touching guard of honour as she left the field. England’s woes deepened when Sneh Rana cleanly dismissed Nat Sciver-Brunt with a beauty, and Sayali Satghare breached Alice Capsey’s defense, reducing the hosts to 59/5.
Just when it looked as though India might close out the match on the third evening, Amy Jones and Mady Villiers stitched together a stubborn 67-run partnership, resisting the Indian attack and briefly reigniting England’s chances. The stand was broken in spectacular fashion as Richa Ghosh sprinted to a close-in catch at silly point to dismiss Villiers off Sneh Rana’s bowling. Jones continued to show resilience, reaching a patient half-century, but England finished the day still in trouble at 130/6, with India firmly in control and on the cusp of a historic victory.
