ESPN reported record-breaking NHL viewership numbers in the 2026 playoffs. Here’s why

Overall, the National Hockey League is enjoying unprecedented success. The salary cap, driven by hockey-related revenue, is climbing at record speeds; expansion teams are entering the league with surprising regularity; and for the first time in a long while, smaller-market clubs do not appear to be facing imminent relocation threats. That same optimism is echoed in ESPN’s NHL viewership figures. From March 10 to June 16, ESPN issued 21 press releases highlighting various viewership milestones, averaging a new record every 4.7 days. Among the highlights were the most-watched NHL game in five years, the most-watched game within the new rights deal, the most-watched regular season under the new deal, the most-watched first- and second-round playoff games under the new rights arrangement, all three of the most-viewed first-round playoff games ever recorded (excluding Game 7s), and the most-watched Stanley Cup Final since 2019.
“It was a historic year for not only ESPN but also TNT in the United States,” said Eric Loh, ESPN’s NHL programming director, in an interview with the Deseret News. “The on-ice drama throughout the year was incredibly compelling, and we’re thrilled to have showcased the Stanley Cup Final in all its glory.” Loh outlined several factors behind the rapid growth in popularity, offering a clear picture of the league’s momentum.
Hockey fans endured two Olympic cycles—2018 and 2022—in which college players and retired NHL stars represented the United States and Canada internationally, because the NHL and NHLPA couldn’t reach an agreement to send the league’s top players to the tournaments. While traditional fans continued to follow the sport, the absence of the best in the world limited the appeal for potential new viewers. The turning point arrived with the 2025 introduction of the 4 Nations Face-Off, which finally fulfilled a nine-year craving for top-tier, best-on-best international hockey (the prior peak being the 2016 World Cup of Hockey). The event occurred amid heightened political tension between the tournament’s two strongest teams, drawing broader attention beyond longtime hockey fans, and that momentum persisted into 2026 with another dramatic Winter Olympics to follow.
In terms of growing the game in the United States, the outcome could not have been more favorable: Team USA captured gold for the first time in 46 years. “Seeing Team USA win gold propels hockey onto a different trajectory for the sport in this country,” Loh remarked. “The pure excitement and the wave of social-media celebrations that followed Jack Hughes’ goal clearly carried over into the second half of the NHL regular season.” The league aims to sustain this momentum moving forward, seeking even greater international visibility to maximize reach and search engine optimization.
