Penn State basketball to play Pitt in iconic venue

After a sweeping set of changes to the roster this offseason, Penn State basketball is focused on building a stronger sense of tradition. This season presents a rare chance to revive one of the sport’s most storied rivalries in one of its most iconic settings. To mark the 150th anniversary of the rivalry, Penn State will take on Pitt at the Palestra, a venue unlike any other. The matchup is scheduled for November 8, promising an atmosphere that could be electric.
Over the years, the Nittany Lions and the Panthers have collided 150 times, but the rivalry has not always simmered with intensity in recent seasons. In fact, the series had only produced nine games in the last two decades prior to Mike Rhoades arriving in Happy Valley and prompting Penn State to schedule a contest against Pitt last year. The result, unfortunately for the Nittany Lions, was a harsh 80-46 defeat. With a renewed sense of purpose, Penn State now has another shot to rebound in one of college basketball’s grandest venues.
The Palestra itself is celebrating a major milestone, marking its 100th year of operation. Known affectionately as the “Cathedral of College Basketball,” the arena has a rich history of memorable moments, particularly as the home court for the University of Pennsylvania. Penn State has played there 64 times, frequently making at least one Big Ten matchup a season a staple of their schedule. Fans value the intimate, old-school atmosphere, with bleachers tucked close to the court that create a unique, up-close experience.
For coach Mike Rhoades and his squad, this trip to the Palestra could represent a defining test in what might be a rebuilding year. A significant portion of the roster is new, and there remains some uncertainty about how the Lions will gel on the floor. Yet the stage offers compelling opportunities to demonstrate progress, including the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament in November and, now, the highly anticipated game against Pitt at such a storied venue. In this context, there is little room for error as Penn State seeks to establish momentum with a refreshed lineup and a growing sense of identity.
This alignment of a historic rivalry with a legendary arena stands to amplify the significance of the season’s early tests. The contest against Pitt at the Palestra will not only affect immediate standings but also serve as a meaningful indicator of how Penn State’s new-look team may compete on the national stage as the year unfolds.
