World Cup dreams dashed for last remaining BVB players Ryerson and Kobel

First, Julian Ryerson and his Norwegian teammates faced England in a bid to reach the semifinals. The Scandinavians, with former Borussia Dortmund standout Erling Haaland anchoring the attack as usual, seized the initiative in the 36th minute when Andreas Schjelderup found the back of the net. Just before the interval, Jude Bellingham—also a former Dortmund player—equalized with a powerful left-footed strike after a solo run, leaving the score at 1-1 at halftime. In the second half, Norway were dealt a setback when a foul by Haaland conceded a second goal, and soon afterward Ryerson was withdrawn early due to injury. The fullback had delivered a spirited performance on the right flank for approximately 60 minutes but had to be replaced by Fredrik Aursnes.
Norway battled to force the match into extra time, showing grit and determination. However, in the 93rd minute, Jude Bellingham struck again with a follow-up that clinched the win for England and solidified the Three Lions’ place in the semifinals.
Meanwhile, Gregor Kobel’s World Cup journey also ended on Saturday night. After another fiercely intense 120 minutes, the goalkeeper and his Swiss teammates fell 1-3 in extra time to defending champions Argentina. Switzerland had managed to level the score from a 0–1 deficit when Dan Ndoye struck, but the visitors were reduced to ten men from the 72nd minute after Breel Embolo received a second yellow card, leaving them to fight on with a man down as the clock ticked toward extra time.
In extra time, however, the Albiceleste—led by captain Lionel Messi—reasserted control and sealed the victory with goals from Julián Álvarez in the 112th minute and Lautaro Martínez in stoppage-time (120+1′). Kobel did his best to keep Switzerland in the game, producing several key saves, but he could not stop any of the three late goals. The match underscored Argentina’s resilience and Sir Lionel Messi’s continued influence as the team advanced to the semi-finals while Kobel and Switzerland concluded their campaign at the tournament.
