PHILADELPHIA (WPRI) — On the final day of the MLB Draft, four more local stars heard their names called. The proceedings began with former Brown pitcher Ryan Oshinskie, who was selected in the sixth round by the Milwaukee Brewers. Oshinskie sat out the entire 2026 season due to an injury, but he contributed to the Bears in 2025, appearing in eight games and totaling 16.1 innings pitched with a 6.06 earned run average.
In the 10th round, URI shortstop Reece Maroney earned a spot with the Philadelphia Phillies. During the 2026 season, Maroney posted a .370 batting average, drove in 24 runs, and tallied a program- and league-leading 90 hits. He also earned recognition as the Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Year and was named to the All-Atlantic 10 Second Team for his stellar overall performance at the plate and in the field.
Four rounds later, former Hendricken pitcher Patrick Clemmey joined Maroney on the Phillies’ radar when he was selected 429th overall. Clemmey spent a postgraduate year at Avon Old Farms in Connecticut this past spring after helping the Hawks win state championships in both 2024 and 2025, continuing a recent run of success for Rhode Island players who move on to professional baseball.
In the 20th round, former Salve Regina pitcher Andrew Wertz was chosen by the Arizona Diamondbacks. Wertz spent the 2026 season with Northeastern University, where he made 22 appearances, recording a 2-2 mark with a 3.46 ERA and six saves, showcasing his reliability and late-inning ability on the mound.
